This compact Anova sous vide cooker stands out as a cheap entry point for precise steak and meal prep cooking, with strong temperature control and reliable set and forget results. The comments highlight tender steaks, juicy chicken, ribs, and easy weeknight prep, and the small size makes it handy for travel or a regular pot. The main drawback is that this model has no buttons or display, so the phone app and Bluetooth are required, and support or subscription changes remain a concern. A solid low cost way to try sous vide if app control does not bother you.

Common Questions (6)

  • Yes. This mini has no physical buttons or display, so it must be controlled through the free app over Bluetooth, with Wi‑Fi features tied to Anova's app/subscription model. That makes it a cheap entry point, but it is less convenient than a unit with onboard controls.

  • For about $20, it can be a strong value if you cook steak or batch meals regularly. It can hold precise temperatures for perfect steaks, chicken, fish, and meal-prep portions, and several comments describe it as paying for itself quickly.

  • No subscription is required for basic use in Bluetooth mode. The app may push a free trial and Wi‑Fi features can be tied to paid access, but the cooker itself can still be used without subscribing.

  • The food still cooks in plastic bags, so that concern remains, but the temperatures are much lower than boiling and microplastic release is described as very low around 130°F. Silicone bags are an alternative if you want to reduce plastic exposure further.

  • Common home guidance is about 1-3 hours depending on thickness, with many cooks using roughly 129-135°F for ribeye or strip and around 133°F for medium-rare filet. After the bath, dry the steak well and sear briefly in a hot pan or grill.

  • Yes. Its compact size makes it practical for travel, and smaller cooks can be done in a regular pot instead of a dedicated container. That makes it a good fit for an Airbnb kitchen or other temporary setup.

You really think Anova wants the liability of people suing them because an appliance that was advertised as free to use when purchased is suddenly behind a paywall and their purchase is now bricked unless they pay? Pretty sure there are laws against that. They could certainly start charging people after a certain date but that would absolutely need to be CLEARLY advertised when you buy the appliance. Currently, the subscription is advertised as optional and lawfully, would need to stay optional for those that purchased it as such.

The product is free to use using the app in BLUETOOTH mode and if you want WIFI mode, you pay for that.
Just move on. I said it show it is free to use currently. But, it is an old model that is discontinud and my lack tech support if there are issues. That is the deal when buying discontinued products.
You really are pushing this harder than makes sense.
Drop it.

Yes really. It is how restaurants prepare their steaks. They can stay in the sous vide pot without risk of overcooking until it is time to finish them. When we are having steaks I'll start them at 9am and they'll be great at 6pm. BUY IT NOW!
Heaven forbid you sous vide a decent cut of meat for 9 hours. First, a good cut of meat will turn to mush in 9 hours. 2-4 hours is the sweet spot. Second, you also have to watch the temp if using sous vide. Anything under 130.5 for more than 2 hours and you risk health issues. There are lots of great books on this but sous vide requires knowing a bit of the science behind it. It's also great for chicken, believe it or not. You can cook a wonderful chicken breast to 145 instead of 165 and make it perfectly safe to eat because safety is a time-temperature formula. Bring it to 145 and hold it there. 165 is commonly used since that is an "instantly safe" temperature, but it also yields a dry chicken breast. You also can pasteurize eggs to make them safe (safer?) to eat in a soft form (over-easy, sunnyside up, etc.). You can cook-cool-hold foods which is radical. You cook your food, plunge it into an ice bath (while still sealed in a vacuum bag) for several hours, then toss into the back of the refrigerator where it can keep for weeks without freezing it. Magic.

His point was that 165 would be better for chicken thigh than steak. I don't have this, but I would guess 120 degrees so you end up with 130-135 medium rare after searing.
Cook to 130.5 for a few hours, pull it out and rest it. Let it cool a bit. Then sear and it will remain perfectly mid-rare.

I have the one with buttons that don't require an app. For those new to sous vide I would recommend this because it is only $20. When you realize how useful it is to your cooking workflow, you can simply gift this to someone for something with dedicated buttons. I prefer buttons as it is just faster to operate personally. I use this to defrost frozen foods quickly. Cook perfect steaks, and meal prep chicken. You will easily get your moneys worth if you meal prep!

Wut??? 165???? Dude. That isn't mixed results, that is ruined steak 100% of the time.
Some people don't want a rare or medium rare steak. But I agree that 165 is usually too high for most steaks. For those who like medium well or well done, 145 is usually fine, especially if you sear it afterwards.
