This IdeaPad Pro 5 stands out as a thin 16 inch OLED laptop with an RTX 5050, strong build quality, and a premium feel for the price. The 2.8K 120Hz screen gets repeated praise, and the GPU plus 8GB of VRAM makes it appealing for light gaming and moderate workloads. Storage is more flexible than expected, with two M.2 slots and support for 2242 and 2280 drives. The main drawback is the soldered 16GB LPDDR5X memory, which limits upgrades and may feel tight for heavier multitasking. Battery life is also modest, and a few reports describe freezing or overheating under light gaming.

Common Questions (5)

  • For basic office, school, and light gaming use, 16GB can be enough. Heavier multitasking, lots of Chrome tabs, large PDFs, development tools, or multiple accounts can push it near full, and the soldered RAM means you cannot expand it later.

  • Yes. It supports up to 2 M.2 SSDs, with 2242 and 2280 sizes supported. The shipped 500GB drive uses the shorter 2242 slot, and the longer full-size slot is open for an easy upgrade.

  • It can handle several games well, and the RTX 5050 is listed at 105W TGP with 8GB GDDR7. Battery drains quickly while gaming unplugged, but it charges quickly when plugged in.

  • No. The 16GB LPDDR5X-8000MT/s memory is soldered, so it cannot be upgraded later. That makes the initial RAM choice important if you expect heavier multitasking or want the laptop to last several years.

  • Yes. The spec page says both USB-C ports support USB-PD, so they can be used for charging. That makes it easier to charge from either side with a compatible USB-C charger.

What do you think your integrated graphics uses?
Which is not the same as saying this grants a 16GB machine 24GB of usable RAM....not even close.

No, but it grants 8 GB for the GPU and a full 16 for the other tasks, and in moderate workloads which would usually take 1-2GB for the GPU you've freed up a significant amount of RAM that was otherwise allocated.

You're shadow boxing with yourself. Go look at the original post I replied to in order to understand the context here.

Yeah, I did, and I mentioned 18-20 for normal tasks.

16gb of unupgradable ram isn't enough these days
true. i'll avoid anything windows with 16gb of ram like a plague. i have the acer helios, upgraded ram to 32gb. each time i looked at the utilization, always always 20gb+ ram being used. this may work for a single account login, but my acer has 4 accounts on it and 2-3 accounts are always signed on at the same time.

No, it isn't. It's 16GB of RAM, period. The two are completely different buckets for most work and do completely different things.
no. windows can use vram to a limited extent and that does make a difference vs an integrated graphics laptop that has no vram and has to allocate some system memory for graphics.

integrated graphics laptop with 16gb system memory and no vram and laptop with 16gb system memory and 8gm vram do not have the same amount of available memory for windows to work with. the vram laptop will have more. period.

Oh my god the arguments about RAM never cease to annoy me on this website. If you know you need more than 16gb of ram, hold out for another laptop. 16 is fine for normal everyday laptop stuff including the light gaming you'll be doing with the 5050, and will be for years.
The 8GB is not enough! movement, has found the 16GB heresy!

That's not how GPU memory works. When I read your first line, it sounds like you are saying windows can borrow RAM from the GPU; it cannot.

Your second line is somewhat correct, but only when the GPU is actually in use, which for gaming, sure, but for standard Windows desktop use, nope, no benefit.

It's true that an iGPU will use a (small) amount of RAM for the display (and having a GPU can avoid that), the reality of the situation is that most of the time the laptop WILL use the iGPU - it's only when gaming or doing GPU tasks that the GPU is actually in use - and so the amount of RAM saved (that tiny amount - typically 250 MB or so) doesn't really matter.

And in no case do you add 8GB (the GPU's memory) to the Windows machine's memory. It just doesn't work that way.

Its very rare to find a combination of OLED, dedicated GPU, upgradable RAM, and two m.2 SSD slots. Lenovo has done a good job with the m.2 slots in their line, almost all the thinkbook, and thinkpad has dual slots and upgradable memory.

Off the Tech Specs page:
  • Supports up to 2 x M.2 SSD (2242/2280)
Does it say what size is used and what size is open?

Do laptops on average die every 2 years?
My wifes old HP laptop is 7 years old and still working except it has maybe 30 minutes of battery life even with replacing the battery due to how inefficient the CPU is. It has 8 gb of ram and didn't really seem like an issue since it would browse the web and do basic things fine. I doubt that increasing the ram to 16 or 32 GB would have made a difference and ram is rarely the first thing to die on cheaper consumer laptops.
