I don't own this brand but I'll tell you this is one of those great tools you never thought you would need! Great for sanding at the end of a project to make everything nice and smooth or squared off.

I became interested in these when I first saw the Ryobi, but I think I can afford to run a cord. What belts are people buying? (More for steel than aluminum or wood.)

I've been using the Bauer (Harbor Freight brand) 80 grit and 120 grit to prep and clean up welds on mild steel.

This brand is a pretty good economy brand. Comparable to big box in-house brands. Arguably a step down from DeWalt/Ryobi/Makita/etc, but arguably not. I'd argue the products often compare favorably (I'm sure there are exceptions, as there always are) but the support is lower tier.

I have several WEN tools, including this one. I haven't used it in a while but I remember it getting the job done (never had another brand of the same tool to compare). When it comes to WEN i usually tell people they are not the best of the best but I have found them to be the best bang for your buck, especially for a hobbyist. Comparing them to Ryobi seems appropriate, but to me comparing Ryobi to Makita and Dewalt is kind of odd. Usually people compare Dewalt, Makita, and Milwaukee...If you compare WEN with the big three, they're pretty much always going to be superior but you're going to pay for it.


It's anecdotal but my personal and second hand (through my dad) experience with WEN customer service has been phenomenal. I have a pneumatic multifunction tool (its an air jackhammer, linked at the bottom of this post) and when i first used it, it was leaking air out of the oiling port in the handle. No amount of thread tape or tightening would stop it from constantly pissing out a little bit of air. The tool worked fine, it was just annoying, and shouldn't do that. I called WEN customer service, explained what was happening, the steps I had taken to remedy it, and asked if I could get a replacement for the top handle portion of the tool. They said they didn't have just the handle to send me, so they sent the complete replacement tool. It was maybe a 15 minute conversation. I still use the original tool, leaking air, and I have a full replacement still sitting in the box... My dad saw the belt/disc sander combo that I have from them and decided to buy one for himself. Upon arrival it would not fire up. He called up customer service and it wasn't long before they said it was probably a failed capacitor inside the unit. They sent him a entire brand new unit just like that. I think at the time he didn't have a working printer and said he wasn't sure how he could print the label to send the other unit back. They said don't worry about it. My dad told his friend about the non working unit, who took it and cracked it open and found that the capacitor had literally never been connected. He connected it and it works fine now. I've heard some bad stories about their customer service, but to me and my dad, they couldn't have been better.

I own a Wen planer. Works great! Bought it for planing stuff where there's a good chance of hitting nails. I hate changing blades in planers. In for one. Thanks op.
