No. It's a transmitter only. Here's one that's similar that's a transmitter & receiver: https://www.amazon.com/EITIPOK-So...hlbWF0aWM=

What is this for? If you are on an airplane that doesn't have bluetooth entertainment system yet?

Never is a long time pal. I go to Asia mostly, 12 times, but have been to Europe 6 times as well, but not in the last year.. Cancun and Seoul on United, you sure didn't need this thing in the last year.

Keep in mind that most airplanes are transitioning to in-flight entertainment over WiFi: connect your tablet/laptop/phone to the WiFi and you can typically browse their in-flight entertainment on your device's browser.

Your device will likely have a larger and better quality screen than whatever is in the headrest in front of you, will connect to whatever headphones you have (obviously), and you don't have to poke the person in front of you in the back of the head every time you browse through the available entertainment.

The number of flights which have in-flight entertainment, do not have in-flight entertainment available over WiFi, have in-headrest screens, and do not connect to headphones over bluetooth seems vanishingly small, to the point that if you ever encountered such an inconvenience surely the backup of the provided earbuds would do for such an extremely uncommon situation.

For long haul and international flights, in seat screens aren't going anywhere for non-budget airlines. They sell ads, and have flight safety and customs information.

These are small enough to carry in the rare cases where you find yourself on an older plane which hasn't been upgraded to bluetooth. This happened to us last summer on a trip back from Atlanta.
Still a lot better than years ago when the only decent noise cancellation required a good pair of headphones. Then we also had to be sure we had an audio headphone cord to connect to the AV system.

The other option is to get one of the older Amazon Echo Dots that has an audio aux out, and connect it to your receiver. I just did this setup myself with an old receiver. Works great for streaming Spotify, plus I can still use my phone to watch other content without interrupting the music.
Oh yeah, that's not a bad option either. I just got the BT audio receiver I ordered last night and will try it out later today or tomorrow.

The seat screens will be there, but chances are, using your own device is a much better option anyway. 99% of seat screens STINK!

Would this work to allow my old A/V receiver (that doesn't have Bluetooth) to stream music wirelessly from my phone to speakers?

Our last few flights to Europe have not had Bluetooth available and the connection at the audio jack was so bad it was practically unusable. We have a couple BT transmitters, not this brand though.

Thanks. I ordered something similar last night:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DPX4MN9P
I got it today and connected it with my cheap RCA cable (red and white to the BT receiver and headphone jack line in to my AVR). Used the AUX input on the receiver and am able to steam music from phone.

That thing is like $60-100 for basic bluetooth rx/tx device. way over priced.
one works well while others dont. they arent equal products so not sure you can say the superior one is over priced
