Amperage capacity is %100 dependent on gauge + length

Here's a quick chart... lots of them out there.

12 Gauge – 25ft/20A – 50ft/15A – 100ft/15A
14 Gauge – 25ft/15A – 50ft/13A – 100ft/10A
16 Gauge – 25ft/13A – 50ft/10A – 100ft/7A

I have several of these that I've bought over the years on sales. There's nothing worse than going to some other dood's house and watching his jump houses blow his breaker because he's running 16ga Christmas light extension cords to them.

Have a 12ga extension cord. Be a man.

I have this. It's well-built and barely feels warm when attached to my 1800 watt heater. But dang, it's HEAVY!

12 but its 15 amps? why isnt it 20 amps? does it have to do with the length of the cord?

I was going to say...... 12/3 100ft has got to be heavy. Sure enough 14 lb.

Probably just the plug type. 20A plugs have that extra "notch"... 12ga wiring itself can carry 20A.

Costco sells 2, 50' for about the same price (sometimes less on sale) if that is more useful to some.

The plug will not fit a 20 A receptacle, so that's probably what they're indicating.

Well... and temperature, but that's getting too deep in the weeds.

hahah.. yeah.... and material and quality.
full copper, with solid plug connectors is different than CCA (cooper clad aluminum) with thin folded aluminum ends.

Exactly exactly. Just pointing out that gauge and length aren't the only variables.
