You can use shout or oxyclean to get stains out of carpet. Very easy.

Not that we cleaned our car mats, but I invested in weather tech mats and don't worry about it anymore.

There are a lot of options for that type of mats but I find them to make the car feel less comfortable, for some reason I like the carpet under my feet, but for the rear I just toss those plastic type mats, but they also make it a bit slippery. There are few other washable plush type mats, but they also don't last as long as the OEM mats for some reason. There are "3D mats" that's like halfway there but they are also slippery, but they fit perfectly without letting any dirt get under the carpet.

I haven't noticed any difference in how the car feels, but I feel better knowing my hubby and his clodhoppers cannot damage and stain the carpet. Every few months I just vacuum out the floor of the car. When we bought this car, (we only by used) the previous owner had a weather tech mat in the trunk area, but only carpet mats over the installed carpet in the car. It was spotless when we got it, but started to look dirty after a few months. There was even a second set of mats included for the front. But for us, the custom fit rubber is perfect.

He is! He installed the mats, and made the majority of the money during our working years. Being a woman in a male-dominated field (computers) in the 70's an 80's, I was paid about half what my male counterparts made. He also did all the cooking and the laundry. Our inside joke was that you needed a PhD to scrub floors. The least I can do is vacuum out the car. LOL
