I still don't understand why these setups are so expensive. You could literally put these things in a real car and expect to pay less.
Huh? Where are you gonna get a steering wheel for cheaper? The shifter set is sold separately for $50, even just the replacement shifter knob in my econo Honda costs more than that.

Bought this XBox version and no complaints. Amateaur racing sim driver and this was a big step up from just a normal controller. So much more immersive. Highly recommend. You are going to want something to mount it on though so its easier to use

Where? Websites say $279 or $299 without the shifter.

What are people's experiences with this vs higher-end direct drive wheels? I've tried this once and personally didn't love it. It was definitely fun but, at least for me, lacked some degree of realism. Are direct drive wheels that much better or does this get you like 80% of what more expensive options get you?

Direct drive setup is about 4x-5x more if you want the lowest end of Fanatec for PS5/PC. Not only in terms of steering wheel feedback, but also ability to adjust brake pressure and accelerator. It's also better to have a actual sim rig rather than just mounting it to a desk. All said and done you're looking at $1300-$1500.

If you are seriously though, people usually recommend a 8nm DD. Any more is overkill. Also you can find them much cheaper and new on eBay.
