An AirTag is not a lost pet finder. It's not even that good of a real time tracker because it needs to be pinged to by other Apple devices within Bluetooth range.
It's to find where you left your keys, not to track your cat. It doesn't have GPS and it doesn't send out cellular signals. It relies completely on being near Apple devices.
I suppose it would work to find a cat hiding in your house within Bluetooth range of your phone.
Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to use AirTags? I bought one for my cat and have no idea how this thing tracks in real time even when using findmyiphone

Find my iPhone > Items > pick the air tag then "play sound" or "directions"

Did you try YouTube? You bought one without knowing how it works?

I have it as a backup to my actual cellular GPS pet tracker. Sure the updates are slow, but it will at least give me an idea of where he is if he goes anywhere near an iPhone if the primary tracker dies or something.
