This was also a GOTY candidate the year Breath of the Wild released. I don't think I'm alone in believing this game is better than the comments here suggest.
the slow reveal of everything was amazing, and the parallel plot lines of what was going on now vs what happened were great. one of those "wish I could.blank my memory and experience it for the first time" games.
I just remember even in the first area starting out and looking at the map and going "what the fark is THAT?" and trying to piece together where I was (and when) throughout the entire thing.
the first vantage point knocked my socks off because I hadn't read a thing about the game so I really had no idea that was what was going on.
I'll probably start it up again on the Steam Deck after writing this; just so much fun. And the DLC is great.
Community Reviews
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is a strong action RPG built around a slow story reveal, machine battles, and striking world building and scenery. The remaster visuals draw praise, and the DLC is also called out as a worthwhile add on. At the same time, the combat and progression can feel repetitive or grindy, and the story, interface, and crafting draw criticism for feeling underdeveloped. It lands as a memorable adventure, especially if you have not played it before.
Common Questions (5)
It may not be worth it if you already own the original, since the remaster is mainly an upgrade rather than a new game. If you have not played Horizon Zero Dawn before, $20 is considered a fair price for the full experience.
The story is praised for its slow reveal of what Zero Dawn is, with parallel past-and-present plot lines and a memorable first-time discovery feel. The lore and world-building are also described as among the best in recent memory.
It can be very replayable if you enjoy the combat and exploration, with some players replaying it multiple times and wanting to experience the story again. Others find it not very replayable because the gameplay and story do not hold up as strongly on a second run.
Some parts can feel grindy, especially if you are pushing skill trees and weapon progression, and the combat loop can become repetitive. The main counterpoint is that the story and machine battles keep it engaging for many players.
The remaster's graphics and scenery are described as impressive, with visuals that stand out even compared with UE5-built games. The art direction is a major strength, especially the machine-world setting and environmental design.
