Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is a strong action RPG built around a slow story reveal, machine battles, and striking world building and scenery. The remaster visuals draw praise, and the DLC is also called out as a worthwhile add on. At the same time, the combat and progression can feel repetitive or grindy, and the story, interface, and crafting draw criticism for feeling underdeveloped. It lands as a memorable adventure, especially if you have not played it before.

Common Questions (5)

  • It may not be worth it if you already own the original, since the remaster is mainly an upgrade rather than a new game. If you have not played Horizon Zero Dawn before, $20 is considered a fair price for the full experience.

  • The story is praised for its slow reveal of what Zero Dawn is, with parallel past-and-present plot lines and a memorable first-time discovery feel. The lore and world-building are also described as among the best in recent memory.

  • It can be very replayable if you enjoy the combat and exploration, with some players replaying it multiple times and wanting to experience the story again. Others find it not very replayable because the gameplay and story do not hold up as strongly on a second run.

  • Some parts can feel grindy, especially if you are pushing skill trees and weapon progression, and the combat loop can become repetitive. The main counterpoint is that the story and machine battles keep it engaging for many players.

  • The remaster's graphics and scenery are described as impressive, with visuals that stand out even compared with UE5-built games. The art direction is a major strength, especially the machine-world setting and environmental design.

Damn. These comments are brutal. I thought the story for this game (and the slow reveal of what Zero Dawn actually is) was phenomenal, the machine battles were a blast to master, the acting was phenomenal, the graphics & scenery in this remaster specifically was impressive (especially compared to games built in UE5), and the world was fleshed out in a way that made me want to explore every crack and crevice of it.

This was also a GOTY candidate the year Breath of the Wild released. I don't think I'm alone in believing this game is better than the comments here suggest.
Yeah not sure what the hate is but the lore and world building in the game was second only to Cyberpunk in recent memory

This is a solid game. Great Story, fun to play, etc etc. Sometimes parts of it are a grind as it is in BotW, but that is part of gaming where there are skill tree's and weapon progression. Honestly though, the game is fun and the story highly enjoyable. The second one...felt like a grind to me, but the story is still good, just more of the same with some nonsense mini game you kind of have to play called strike which kills the game for me.

The arena part in forbidden west was a bit frustrating. Had to take a break a few times. Never did the strike game.

Odd. I started reading your post but then my phone disappeared from my hand and showed up near my great aunt's house. I tried to resume reading there but then it disappeared and showed up at another family members house.
If you read your phone in the dark you can go to your aunt's house too.

It's absurd that all of their first party games are not on ps+
It's one to the reasons Playstation has been so successful this generation financially. HZD Forbidden West was the first and last first party game that was released on PS+ after about one year. Sales for that game tanked compared to what the player base should have generated. That's why they pulled this game off PS+ about one year later. Spiderman 2 for instance took 3 years to get to PS+. I'm sure HDZ FW will make its way back to plus but not before they've seen a return of investment on the upgraded PS5 version.

Totally respect that others may not have enjoyed it, but I loved this game as a first play though. I'm not the type to replay games, but it's been enough years that I'll give this one another go
Ditto. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game.

Curious how this looks - the original game looked great I can't see paying for a remastered version, how much better could it be?
