Fresh root is a far better value for me. A good supplement should have 95% curcuminoids with BioPerine.
Even then, curcumin has very poor absorption in the body. To significantly improve absorption, it must be taken with black pepper extract (piperine). Without piperine, most of the curcumin simply passes through your system unused.
Because of this, turmeric "powder supplements" are mostly a marketing gimmick and can be misleading, especially when sold at high prices. You can buy regular turmeric powder as a spice for very little money and use it in cooking or tea — there's no reason to overpay for it in supplement form.
What you actually want is a curcumin supplement (not turmeric) standardized to at least 85–95% curcuminoids, and combined with piperine for proper absorption. Compare that to turmeric powder, which contains only about 3% curcumin — it's a massive difference in potency and effectiveness.
Curcumins are considered the most potent natural anti-inflammatory known (only surpassed by Avocados.) High-quality curcumin supplements are more expensive for a reason: they contain highly concentrated, purified curcumin ready for absorption. They usually come in capsules (typically made from gelatin, which some people prefer to avoid). The capsules can easily be opened if you prefer mixing the powder into drinks or tea.
Personally, I've experienced headaches from consuming curcumin. If that happens, you can open the capsule and take a smaller portion of the powder, spreading the dose out over a day or two instead of taking it all at once. You don't need to consume the entire capsule dose at once — it's often better to divide doses throughout the day for steadier absorption and fewer side effects.
Also note that turmeric and curcumin can be hard on the kidneys, especially if taken in high doses or without proper hydration. You should drink plenty of water when consuming them, as curcumin can have a dehydrating effect. If you have kidney issues, consult your healthcare provider and research carefully before using turmeric or curcumin supplements.
Lastly, keep in mind that turmeric and curcumin are extremely powerful natural dyes and can permanently stain clothing, countertops, and other surfaces.
