For the sequels, I think they had so much more money to play with and focused more on making them blockbusters and ended up with more style than substance. They lost the gritty feel that grounded the first one in reality and ended up with these slick, shiny action movies that kind of gave a back seat to the intellectualism and philosophy that drove the first one.
So yeah. I don't think it's fair to pretend they don't exist. They do close out the story loop. And I think especially the second one is just a fun action movie. The car chase sequence is an absolute blast to watch. But for sure are much less dynamic and interesting movies than the original.
