About this book:
  • Page length: 344
  • In Discipline is Destiny, Holiday draws on the stories of historical figures we can emulate as pillars of self-discipline, including Lou Gehrig, Queen Elizabeth II, boxer Floyd Patterson, Marcus Aurelius and writer Toni Morrison, as well as the cautionary tales of Napoleon, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Babe Ruth. Through these engaging examples, Holiday teaches readers the power of self-discipline and balance, and cautions against the perils of extravagance and hedonism.
  • At the heart of Stoicism are four simple virtues: courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom. Everything else, the Stoics believed, flows from them. Discipline is Destiny will guide readers down the path to self-mastery, upon which all the other virtues depend. Discipline is predictive. You cannot succeed without it. And if you lose it, you cannot help but bring yourself failure and unhappiness.

This is a really motivating book that gives you a great picture of a number of things that will make you more disciplined and productive. If the title interests you, you'll probably love it.

I think stoicism is a past idea 😁. Each book in the series as a slightly different focus. For them to be read stand alone, some overlap is necessary, IMO.

I find the author to be a little annoying but to be fair, he's talking about stoicism - of course it's an old idea. That doesn't mean anything - people aren't born automatically knowing everything that's come before them.

Ryan was doing good until he started using his Stoism pages on social media to push his personal political views.

He can't control himself the past year and goes off on rants now about the political climate of the country. (Ironically not very stoic of him.)

If you buy any book just get Meditations: Marcus Aurelius.

I on the other hand don't need self discipline books, I have perfect control of my actions. The fact that I choose to use all my time scrolling instead of doing the work I need to, well, I just need less control so that I can't make myself do that.

If you're a christian, then you're already aiming for the same values as what stoicism is trying to teach. the New Testament teaches almost parallel outputs of character, one view simply equates it to Logos or Reason, and the other equates it to an external God.
