Community Reviews
This refurbished Netgear Nighthawk cable modem is a DOCSIS 3.1 option aimed at high speed cable internet, but the thread focuses more on compatibility and value than on features. It can work well once activated, and one long term owner has had 18 months without issues. The main theme is that cable providers, especially Comcast and Xfinity, can be picky about modem support and upload speed tiers, so the right model matters. There are also concerns about refurbished units being returned for faults or old age, and the price feels high for older hardware.
Common Questions (4)
Yes. The modem has to be supported by your cable plant/provider because they push configuration data and firmware to it. Some providers may refuse activation or limit upload speeds on unsupported models, so checking the ISP's compatible-modem list matters before buying.
Not always. Comcast/Xfinity mid-split upload support is limited to certain third-party modems, and unsupported models can be capped around 40 Mbps upload even when the plan advertises much higher speeds.
A refurbished modem can simply be an open-box or used return, sometimes missing accessories or the original box. It may also have been returned because it failed to meet the buyer's speed requirements or provider compatibility needs, not necessarily because the hardware was broken.
One owner reported 18 months of use with no issues, but other comments cite review-reported failures such as reboot loops, no signal output, or dying after about a year. That makes long-term reliability a practical concern to weigh against the lower refurbished price.

Modems get returned often because the person isn't getting the cable provider's advertised speed for whatever reason.
There are various reasons for this, like the area being oversold/crowded (which a different modem won't help)... but one I've personally encountered is the fact that Comcast/Xfinity only supports 'mid-split upload' on a few select 3rd party modems to enable upload speeds above 40mbps. I ended up returning an Arris S33 because that didn't, and ended up getting a Hitron CODA56 that does. I was limited to ~42mbps upload with the S33, but now I'm getting above advertised (1000/100mbps advertised, ~1200/120mbps actual).
