It's 7% less than Amazon's "Typical Price." That said, it's the lowest price I found anywhere. And if you haven't noticed with inflation and all the tariffs... not a lot of Knipex selling for under $25. $23 is pretty much Harbor Freight ICON pliers pricing.

I heard a lot of Amazon ones can be fake. Isn't it worth spending the $2 and getting from somewhere reputable?

Honestly, I've tried very hard at one point to find any evidence of counterfeit Knipex, but when it comes to Knipex pliers -- I simply haven't found compelling evidence that counterfeit Knipex is really even a "thing." That said, buying Knipex directly from Amazon should greatly reduce the chance you receive a counterfeit (vs a marketplace third party seller, for example).

I've seen a few videos that suggest maybe the cheap Amazon Knipex are factory seconds and the ones sold by proper german tool outlets have a bit better fit and finish. I've never seen anything that definitively proved it, a lot of it could just come down to placebo and the youtubers just expecting to see a difference while just pointing out completely normal variances in the manufacturing process. Regardless, even the supposed "factory seconds" were much nicer than most other tool brands.

Well, people on TikTok and YouTube try to create content, and sometimes there's a desire to just create content vs create useful or accurate content (ie, the title of a video named "counterfeit Knipex pliers" would probably get a lot of views just based on the title). That said, I'm not aware that Knipex even sells factory seconds/ blemished/ irregulars. People can create BS videos about anything on social media, but who actually has any proof from Knipex or Knipex merchants that there are "second tier" Knipex pliers even being sold?

Btw, I double checked with Google AI, and this is what I got back (see below). Seems that factory seconds are highly unlikely. That said, a big caveat with the below... when I checked the link to where Google AI was getting it's information from on "counterfeits,"... the link went back to Reddit, lol. So, basically, people speculate on Reddit that there are counterfeit Knipex, but lack real proof, and then the search engines, including AI LLM's end up picking up speculation on social media sites like Reddit w/o actual proof.

Quality Control and Production
  • Stringent Inspection: Knipex utilizes 3D optical measuring systems, hardness testing, and manual inspections to ensure their tools meet high standards.
  • "Seconds" Policy: If a tool does not meet their strict quality standards, it is typically recycled rather than sold at a discount as a "second."
  • Counterfeits: Reports of defective, low-quality, or oddly finished Knipex tools are often suspected to be counterfeits, particularly when bought from unauthorized third-party sellers on sites like Amazon.

Yep. HF Icon pricing has gotten a little 'too big for its britches' considering most of it is made in China. The one redeeming factor is the 'lifetime warranty' and being able to swap tools in store (assuming they're in stock).

These are made in Germany, and every Knipex tool I've acquired has been among the absolute best in terms of fit/finish and material selection - good quality steel of the ideal alloy for the tool's purpose. True buy-it-for-life type stuff. Seems like they just don't let tools that have sloppy fitment or other defects leave the factory as part of their QC process.

6 1/4 is a little short for me, If you're only going to have one in your tool bag I'd wait for the 8".

Not a great price, relative to usual, but it is a very well made tool.

Harbor Freight has probably one of the least fussy warranty processes. You walk in with the broken tool, they tell you to grab a new one, and you're out the door.

I've got a few of each. I do think Knipex ones are slightly higher quality but to ignore how easy Icon/HF is to warranty items is just being ignorant.

This model is a little flexible, the jaws bend with moderate twisting force.

For tools like this, you also have the advantage of being able to touch them in store. QA on the tools might be bad, but that doesn't matter if you can sort through the shelf and find a good one.

I picked up a set of Doyle diagonal cutters a while back and they've been great...there were copies on the shelf with misaligned jaws or other issues, but 30 seconds of sorting found one with straight jaws and a good looking grind.

Unless you are a really heavy duty user, for things like pliers and cutters the most important thing is usually the QA. A cheap no-name needlenose with perfect jaws is better than a name brand with gaps or misalignment.
