There are obviously better materials out there depending on what exactly you want from a hat, but we have a handful of carhartt acrylic beanies kicking around here and they all hold up well and are very warm.

Exactly, folks are quick to jump on acrylic knit hats, but they are an effective and low-cost solution for folks who aren't going to be using them around sparks/flames (acrylic is highly flammable). Soft, very warm, easy on the skin (for most).
Yes, it's not as breathable as natural fibers, so it can make you sweaty, and it can get smelly because of that. On the other hand, acrylic hats are machine-washable, unlike most wool hats.
I use my acrylic beanies from various brands all winter, doing chores, shoveling snow, whatever. They just work.
