depends on what you are looking to do. all the islands are good for relaxing. some are better for food, shopping, and tourist stuff. other islands are good for outdoor activities.

Thanks for the response! I definitely enjoy outdoor activities. I'm a surfer and I'd love to teach my wife how to surf.

Oahu is good for first-timers because it is the traditional Hawaiian vacation, crowded beaches at Waikiki, lots of good food, and the typical tourist trap activities. Very relaxing and good for families.

Kauai is a lot more laid back. Not as many resort hotels, more condo rental units, and a lot more culture and beautiful views. Just be warned the island has a very high population of chickens

And they start making noise at 5am! We were on vacation there, and had to change our hours to 6-9pm thanks to noisy roosters next door. No late night partying. Or stay in a high-rise.

Kauai is more outdoorsy focused. Oahu has a good balance of beaches, city life, Hawaiian nature. Big island gives you more outdoors vibes as well and its huge. Maui is somewhere between Kauai and Oahu. My personal favorites were Oahu and Big Island. I went to both island on the same itinerary, would recommend you do that as it gives a good mix and match. Plus if the weather isnt good in one island, you can wait to hop on the plane to go to the next one.
