Just a warning: if you sign up for instant ink, and get instant ink cartridges then you cancel the subscription the printer will not let you print with the instant ink cartridges.

I feel like Instant Ink gets a lot of bad rap that it doesn't deserve. It's a subscription model - pay as you go. Like your electricity, piped gas. And they bill in terms of pages used, not how much ink is used (or how many cartridges you went through).

It actually works out better than buying a cartridge outright, cuz if your print head is clogged due to not using it for an extended time, or you disproportionately used one color more than others, then you're still out of the money you paid for the cartridge. With instant ink though, you could print text pages or full color pages, and still pay the same price per page.

Of course, you could argue that the cartridges themselves are overpriced to begin with so the projected 'value' of instant ink is artificially inflated, or that a monochrome laser printer is better value in long run for text documents, or that you could refill cartridges - all of those arguments are true - but for the flexibility and peace of mind it offers, especially if you rarely print a lot of documents, but would appreciate one being available in standby whenever you need to print that odd document once in a while, I really appreciate having a service like this that costs me $2 a month.

Just keep your expectations clear on that you're paying a monthly service fee for this whether you use it or not, like a Prime / Netflix subscription. Luckily, you get free pages for each tier, unused pages roll over to next months (with limits), and overages are billed at reasonable pay-as-you-go prices and you could switch plans anytime.

Do you need the HP Smart App to scan to your computer or can you scan to the computer from the printer? My family's last HP all in one printer wouldn't let you select scan from the printer itself. You had to put the page on the printer, open the HP Smart App on the computer, and click scan from the computer. Quite tedious when the printer and computer are in different rooms and/or if you are scanning multiple pages.
