Make sure you upgrade the firmware on the router before doing any testing or setting up. The older firmware caused major issues but I have 2 connected as a wireless mesh and I haven't had an issue with them for over a year now.

Can't imagine paying $190 not to have 6 GHz.

I had to go look that up, but you're right.

A major part of the appeal to these new expensive routers is to get away from the crowded 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radio spectrums.

This router does not give you that.

6 GHz is pretty bad range / wall penetration in my experience. In my case, any device that could actually use the 6 GHz effectively is easily/already wired Ethernet. Once I start going to other rooms where where wifi is convenient, then the 6 GHz signal falls apart and the 5 GHz performs better. So I don't even use the 6 GHz. I personally would not let lack of 6 GHz be a major decision maker

I currently use the base xfinity router for my wireless connections. I have a small house but would like my range to be stronger for my detached garage's opener to connect to wifi. Is something like this overkill? Any other suggestions?

Move the WiFi router to a better area.
My router is centrally located in the 2 story house and provides good coverage to the 3,600 sq/ft house and attached garage and surrounding yard.
External antennas help, but it's not a solution to bad placement in the first place. Most of those using mesh could get away with a single router if they just placed it better.

These are nice units. I am using one that is a couple years old. It has nice logging, allows you to use Open DNS to help protect your house, and seems to handle plenty of wifi guests with ease. I have over 40 wifi connections on mine in my home at any given time and it doesn't seem to struggle or need to be rebooted. It's a reliably device with good coverage. The single unit easily covers my whole 3,400 square foot house when placed on the middle floor. When placed in the basement, the upstairs coverage was spotty.

I had been perfectly happy with my AC68U (converted from T-Mobile) before upgrading to a 6E mesh system recently. Didn't actually see, nor did I expect, any noticeable improvement in range or performance for my use cases. The upgrade was primarily driven by the end of security updates for the old model.

Hmmm, I just got the Cudy M11000 two unit mesh for $250

https://www.amazon.com/Cudy-Tri-B...JGXG&psc=1.

It has 10% off right now, also. Mesh seems the way to go to me, if you need more coverage.
