Hard Maple or Sugar Maple is 1450 on the Janka Scale, Bamboo is only 1380.

Bamboo is softer than Hard Maple, so don't let the internet kids tell you that "Bamboo will destroy your knives!!!!!!!!!!1"

I'm skeptical of the claims that bamboo cutting boards have a noticeable increased dulling effect compared to other true wood cutting boards, but it's simply a fact that bamboo is higher on the Janka hardness scale than Hard Maple

Looks like there is some variance to the accepted values. I'm seeing bamboo above hard maple in other charts.

Anything is possible on the internet.

Any $20 cutting board is not going to be made from any exotic or crazy hard bamboo. They are going to use the cheapest, softest stuff to maximize the life of the tooling.

I'm in for a $12 set of *3* cutting boards = my knives a'int all that to be worried about Janka scale variances of +/- 200 😁

That said, I am curious about the science and the myth vs reality of wood boards and knife damage. I mostly use plastic boards (I know, I know) and $30 Victorinix and Mercer-class knives so don't have a ton of firsthand experience.

I'd only use a plastic or glass board for raw meats. Otherwise a wood board is the safest for the health of you and your knives.

No wood cutting board of any species is going to actually 'damage' your knives. Use your Steel to straighten your edge and get back to cutting.

Once a year, get your knives professionally sharpened (costs you maybe $10 ?), and you are all set.

And some (singles, not sets) with end=grain construction are only a few dollars more

TIL people have a genuine fear for their steel knives when confronted with wooden cutting boards.

I use very inexpensive knives that sharpen easily so I'm not too worried about it. It looks like a great deal to me and I already have one bamboo cutting board and I've never noticed that it dulls even the cheap knives that I use. Thanks for the post!
