That price was over seven years ago. A lot has changed since then, primarily inflation and the cost of goods post-COVID.
When you calculate for inflation, $250 in December 2018 is roughly $320 today. The cost of these cans today would be akin to buying them for $210 back in 2018.
The HD 600 is a long running reference headphone best known for neutral, accurate sound and a natural presentation that suits classical, acoustic, and other mix focused listening. The comfort is strong too, with soft pads and a cushioned headband, and the design has a reputation for lasting years because pads and cables can be replaced. The main tradeoffs are a narrow soundstage for games and movies, a cable that runs from both sides, and the need for an amp to get the best from its 300 ohm drivers. It remains a classic pick for listeners who want honest sound over extra bass or flash.
Classical and acoustic listeners who want a neutral presentation, because the sound stays close to the studio mix with no added fluff.
Competitive gamers who depend on wide positional cues, because the soundstage is narrow and footsteps or directional cues are weaker than on alternatives.
It can work for FPS and directional cues, but it is not the strongest choice for gaming because the soundstage is narrow. For a better competitive edge, the HD 560S, HD 599, or AKG K612 Pro are better fits.
Yes. The HD 600 is tuned for neutral, accurate playback, so it presents music close to the studio mix with little added coloration. That makes it especially strong for classical and acoustic listening, while bass-heavy listeners may prefer a different model.
The HD 600 is comfortable for long sessions, with soft ear pads and a comfortable headband foam. The pads and cable can wear out over time, but both are replaceable with original or aftermarket parts.
The HD 600 has less low-end bass and slightly more forward mids and treble than the HD 6XX. The 6XX is the more bassy, fun-leaning option, while the HD 600 is the more neutral choice.
Yes, an amp is recommended to get the best sound from the HD 600's 300-ohm drivers. It can still be used without one, but amplification helps it perform at its best.
Yes, but it does not include a mic, so you need a separate solution such as a ModMic. That makes it easy to add voice chat without changing the headphone itself.
I have these and they are really nice. The head foam on top is really comfortable and also the ear pads that come w/ it are super soft. Audio is superb.
The only negative is the audio cord coming out of both sides is kinda annoying. Especially the default audio cable. It sometimes feels too short up top and I find myself accidentally yanking the cord once in awhile. You can order 3rd party replacement cords tho. So helps, but just dont think the design is the best. I prefer headphones where the audio cable only needs to plug and connect on one side of your ear. Over all tho, for this price range these are one of the best headphones you can get...after this price point it can get pretty crazy w/ whats out there.
You didn't mention the main key; no 4.4 that 660s2 come with
HD600 shares a similar sound signature with the HD6XX, but with less low-end bass. HD600 features slightly more forward mids and treble, which some may find preferable. While I prefer the fun sound of the HD6XX, the HD600 can excel on certain tracks.
HD600 is fine for FPS, but I recommend HD560S/HD599 or AKG K612 Pro for a better competitive edge.
600 is for classic music, if vocal I suggest 650. s2 for bass favor. 490 for studio use. 800s2 if you want top classic, big soundstage, games and $$$$$$
I just realized that RTINGS.com is now behind a paywall.
Omg they are...they did good work, but im not doing a subscription for a product review site. Pretty sure there are a couple other places on the interwebs for reviews...
These headphones offer excellent value for their price. They have a natural sound quality, a spacious design, and are comfortable to use for extended periods.

How would you describe their sound signature to something like a Grado SR80, or AKG K612?

Imagine buying these back in 1997 for $450.

Movie and bass-first listeners who want a fun, punchy sound, because the tuning is neutral with less low-end weight.
Listeners who want plug-and-play loudness from a weak source, because an amp is recommended to get the best sound from the 300-ohm design.
People who want a built-in microphone, because a separate mic solution is needed for voice chat.
