That price was over seven years ago. A lot has changed since then, primarily inflation and the cost of goods post-COVID.
When you calculate for inflation, $250 in December 2018 is roughly $320 today. The cost of these cans today would be akin to buying them for $210 back in 2018.
They've been fine in my experience. Never had an issue with directional sounds w/these. You'll need to find a solution for a mic though, I put a mod mic on mines.

I really like my 6xx, and think getting another pair... alternatively I can get this for a change. is the price "front page" deal?
According to Gemini, Amazon (New): The all-time low is $249.00 (December 2018).

I really like the sound profile of the HD6XX. Kind of on the same boat as you, tempted to get the HD600 to see how different they are between each other. I have the HD599 and at least to me the HD6XX has better sound. I'm sure I can EQ the HD599 to sound close to the HD6XX, but really liking their natural sound.
no, they have a narrow soundstage, they are not good for games or movies vs other headphones at the same price point. I'd check out some HiFiMan Edition XS

HD600 shares a similar sound signature with the HD6XX, but with less low-end bass. HD600 features slightly more forward mids and treble, which some may find preferable. While I prefer the fun sound of the HD6XX, the HD600 can excel on certain tracks.

Are these good for fps shooters?
HD600 is fine for FPS, but I recommend HD560S/HD599 or AKG K612 Pro for a better competitive edge.

Been using the HD 600 since 2005 and these are worth every penny. It was worth it back in 2005 at $399 and still worth it at $269 in 2026. Like others mentioned, these are neutral, you hear audio exactly how it's recorded, no fluff. If you're a bass head, wait for the HD 6XX to go on sale again from Massdrop.
I bought this for $250 on Adorama 10 years ago and it served me well till a few months ago when one side stopped working, it's been a good run and I really enjoy it. I ordered the 6xx from Drop and haven't had a chance to use much but at this price I'm really tempting to give it another try

Imagine buying these back in 1997 for $450.

I don't like neutral, I like fun, and the 490's sound WAY better for what I like. (Rock, anything with bass, watching movies, etc)
