That price was over seven years ago. A lot has changed since then, primarily inflation and the cost of goods post-COVID.
When you calculate for inflation, $250 in December 2018 is roughly $320 today. The cost of these cans today would be akin to buying them for $210 back in 2018.
The HD 600 is a long running reference headphone best known for neutral, accurate sound and a natural presentation that suits classical, acoustic, and other mix focused listening. The comfort is strong too, with soft pads and a cushioned headband, and the design has a reputation for lasting years because pads and cables can be replaced. The main tradeoffs are a narrow soundstage for games and movies, a cable that runs from both sides, and the need for an amp to get the best from its 300 ohm drivers. It remains a classic pick for listeners who want honest sound over extra bass or flash.
Classical and acoustic listeners who want a neutral presentation, because the sound stays close to the studio mix with no added fluff.
Competitive gamers who depend on wide positional cues, because the soundstage is narrow and footsteps or directional cues are weaker than on alternatives.
It can work for FPS and directional cues, but it is not the strongest choice for gaming because the soundstage is narrow. For a better competitive edge, the HD 560S, HD 599, or AKG K612 Pro are better fits.
Yes. The HD 600 is tuned for neutral, accurate playback, so it presents music close to the studio mix with little added coloration. That makes it especially strong for classical and acoustic listening, while bass-heavy listeners may prefer a different model.
The HD 600 is comfortable for long sessions, with soft ear pads and a comfortable headband foam. The pads and cable can wear out over time, but both are replaceable with original or aftermarket parts.
The HD 600 has less low-end bass and slightly more forward mids and treble than the HD 6XX. The 6XX is the more bassy, fun-leaning option, while the HD 600 is the more neutral choice.
Yes, an amp is recommended to get the best sound from the HD 600's 300-ohm drivers. It can still be used without one, but amplification helps it perform at its best.
Yes, but it does not include a mic, so you need a separate solution such as a ModMic. That makes it easy to add voice chat without changing the headphone itself.
They've been fine in my experience. Never had an issue with directional sounds w/these. You'll need to find a solution for a mic though, I put a mod mic on mines.
no, they have a narrow soundstage, they are not good for games or movies vs other headphones at the same price point. I'd check out some HiFiMan Edition XS
I have hifiman he560 v4 at the moment but they are falling apart. Going to get some replacement parts to try to put them back together.
HD600 shares a similar sound signature with the HD6XX, but with less low-end bass. HD600 features slightly more forward mids and treble, which some may find preferable. While I prefer the fun sound of the HD6XX, the HD600 can excel on certain tracks.
HD600 is fine for FPS, but I recommend HD560S/HD599 or AKG K612 Pro for a better competitive edge.

I prefer the XS for sound, but the comfort is very poor. I kept my Sennheisers and upgraded the XS to the HE-1000 Stealth.
the he1000 sounds mighty tempting, what are you using to run them? I was looking at the arya stealth or the organic...i have the hd6se v2, they said it's quite good, i may have to mess with it some more and find a way to sample the he1000
These are a true Buy it For Life item. I bought my pair as a teenager (saved up for a long time!) in the 90s, and they're still going strong. The padding sometimes wears out, but it's easily replaceable with original parts you can buy for a reasonable price from Sennheiser. My cable would also periodically break, but since I bought their more robust cable, I've never had that problem again.

The easily replaceable wear parts definitely have helped. The first time you do it, it's nerve wreaking though. The first time I replaced the pads, I bought genuine direct from Sennheiser, they were expensive. I tried generics, they were just as good and didn't feel any different from genuine so have been using generics ever since, at a third of the cost. I went through 2 OEM cables before realizing that they were crap. Switched to aftermarket cables a decade ago and haven't had any problems since.
Been using the HD 600 since 2005 and these are worth every penny. It was worth it back in 2005 at $399 and still worth it at $269 in 2026. Like others mentioned, these are neutral, you hear audio exactly how it's recorded, no fluff. If you're a bass head, wait for the HD 6XX to go on sale again from Massdrop.
How about this with bose ultra comfort? Which one you recommend?
audiophile for beginners. Bose is great, but didn't any entry ticket for audiophile. I love boss, but they are not same level. I have Bose 700, 660s2.....

Imagine buying these back in 1997 for $450.

The HD 600 delivers a neutral, accurate sound profile that matches how recordings are made in the studio.
The HD 600 can be a comfortable long-session headphone thanks to soft head foam and included ear pads.
The HD 600 supports long-term maintenance because padding and cables can be replaced with parts from Sennheiser.
The HD 600 can work well for competitive FPS use while directional cues remain usable.
The HD 600 can be less appealing for bass-forward listening since it has less low-end bass than the HD 6XX.
The dual-sided cable connection can feel annoying, and the default cable length may lead to accidental yanking.
The HD 600 has a narrow soundstage, which can make it less suitable for games and movies than other options at similar prices.
The HD 600 may require an amplifier to reach its best sound because it is a 300-ohm headphone.
