Also, the data usage the guy is talking about is easily visible through any third party firmware or with add ons available with those firmware, but let the prosumer chasing types go overboard with something that will not offer much more but will cost 3-4x what these cheapie routers with OpenWrt or DD-WRT are capable of. Now I'm not saying Ubiquiti is junk. It does offer a lot more than what OpenWrt could, but I see so many techie wannabe dad types that spend so much time, money, and resources on things that yield them zero benefit. Meanwhile, the granny next door who barely knows how to run a fax machine is running a 15 year old D-Link router that hasn't received security updates in 10 years and hasn't been hacked. Shoot, I have a relative who's a doctor who had this kind of setup for years before moving to a generic mesh system, and believe me, he's not setting up VLANs, managed switches, and multiple SSIDs to "secure" his network. I don't even know if he knows if his old D-Link router has WPA2 security, or what that even means. His bank account seems fine, probably better than most of the people here who are obsessed with "security" with 10 different VLANs and firewall rules.
Anyway, this E9450 isn't OpenWrt compatible since it's a Broadcom device. It looks like DD-WRT supports this, but not 100% sure how good it is. The E8450 apparently is a great OpenWrt router. The flashing process is a pain, but once that's done it's supposedly great. I regret not buying the 2 pack combo on eBay recently.

I have the e8450 reconditioned, and I installed OpenWRT. I have the GL.iNet Opal, Beryl, and Flint 2 models.
If you're planning on using OpenWRT, be sure to get a router with minimum specs like 1GB RAM and storage. That is very useful for running AdGuard Home, for example, with enough blocklist, plus a VPN like Wireguard.
Step 1: Apply initial firmware - openwrt-25.12.0-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-initramfs-kernel.bin
Reboot
Step 2: Upgrade to this stable release - openwrt-25.12.0-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
Reboot
The steps are a lot more convoluted for me to follow (Change to UBI, etc.) - Can you confirm that doing a simple upgrade with the Kerenel file first, and then with sysupgrade is sufficient please?
For future, do you just download the new sysupgrade.bin and flash via UI? Thanks!

I guess it's an upgrade? I'm not worried about putting OpenWRT on it because I got the $25 linksys a year or two ago that has openWRT support and then never even bothered setting it up, this was supposed to just be a replacement to a wifi access point I have in my kitchen lol
ETA: Also looks like they shipped it already, I just got the email this morning, so I guess that 2 week shipping window was exaggerated.

How many devices do you have on this router? I wanted to buy one to it out with Open-wrt and our camera system itself has 16 POE cameras on it with a PC controlling them.

Converting to UBI layout used to be simply recommended but is now required: Since 2021-08-27, it has no longer been possible to keep the default vendor flash layout (a.k.a. "non-UBI"), as it contains ECC errors out of the factory, and these errors are not compatible with the new SPI-NAND driver, that means you can no longer install the "non-UBI" firmware (*.bin)."

OpenWRT versions from them contain many vulnerabilities and errors that have required patching, which has been implemented after 2021. Running such vulnerable software is inadvisable and exposes users to grave security-related consequences.
Reasons for returning any router, and this router too, to factory OS abound. Just explore any router support forum. E8450 OpenWrt users have expressed reason to return to factory OS. https://forum.openwrt.o
And the E8450 is an especially cumbersome device for finagling changes in software state of OpenWRT, from UART cable-to-board-pin access, to u-boot, to upgrades -- there are many other routers without those problems and also available reconditioned.
Things are so much easier without futzing about with every device! If it ain't broken, don't fix it...

Assuming you have no intention of going back to factory firmware the directions to convert to UBI and install OpenWRT from factory Linksys firmware is as follows:
1) Login to the router. Go to ADMINISTRATION > FIRMWARE UPGRADE
2) Make sure your router is at least on Linksys Firmware Version 1.1.01.272918 or higher
3) If running stock firmware < 1.2.00.273012, upload flash the UNSIGNED INSTALLER image: openwrt-...-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-ubi-initramfs-recovery-installer.itb
Otherwise, if stock firmware is >= 1.2.00.273012, upload flash the SIGNED INSTALLER image: openwrt-...-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-ubi-initramfs-recovery-installer_signed.itb

4) After flashing the router will automatically reboot after flashing.
5) Login again, and upload the openwrt "sysupgrade" v24 or higher file and Uncheck "Keep settings and retain the current configuration"
6) Router should automatically reboot and your done.
7) All future upgrades should only need "sysupgrade" for "Linksys E8450 UBI"
