Yes. I own this and have used it to dig into soil fhat was too hard for a shovel. It's also good for breaking up bricks and softer masonry items. I found that it struggled with hardened concrete. Also, i paid $70 from Amazon about 18 months ago.

Unfortunately 5/8" hex bits aren't really that common so your selection of bits will be limited to pretty much just like the ones that come with it.

I used this $149 one from Amazon for a large concrete patio. 20 x 20 and 6 inches thick. It worked great. When I was done I sold it for $100. It's a Hitachi design that they are making cheap now that the patent ran out.

that's the reason why I asked. I'm too am not built like zoolander to run a jackhammer.
The electric ones you rent really aren't that bad to use. You're thinking of the metal pneumatic ones which take a little bit of strength

Asphalt is much softer than concrete. I would think this will work fine with breaking them up.

I had what was about a 65-70lb electric one and I was wrecked by the time I was done. One of the main problems I had was that my entire basement has a pretty good layer of pea stone under the slab and when I did break all the way thru the slab the hammer would sink deep into the soft stone and I'd have to lift it out, a lot. ~50 year old desk jockey at the time. And you could also chalk a good amount of my trouble up to inexperience too. I did build the house myself close to 30 years before that, but running a jack hammer was totally new to me. I had to call a friend over to help get the sump installed after I got everything dug out. Didn't help that at the time the water lever around us had gotten so high that water was pushing up thru every crack in the slab.

truck for hammers: use an asphalt bit.... they won't punch through and drag you with them

think this can break up my backyard slab? It's quite a large area and don't feeling like getting this to just chip at.
How thick? Rebar? Age? PSI? Sq ft? etc.

All those lead to "it depends." Concrete is harder than some surfaces but softer than solid rock like granite. And concrete strength varies. If it was weak bagged 2500 psi stuff, a hammer drill can put enough holes to make a stress fault that'll just break when lifted. If it's 7000 psi with large aggregate that's 50 year old, I wouldn't even mess with it myself at this point but hire someone. Some old concrete is a pain even with a hammer on an excavator.

That said, residential stuff usually isn't that bad, and this will likely do the job. The part I don't like about the tool for a slab is how short it is, so you'll be bent over the entire time. 18lbs and 19J isn't very big for a hammer though, so it should be very manageable.

I would suggest renting one as well.

Rent a large one. That's what I did when I needed to make a hole in my basement slab for a sump pump several years ago. That was also when I found out I wasn't built to run a jack hammer...
At work they pulled out a air compressor jackhammer that must have weighed like 100 pounds, I ran it all day and I found out one of them big boys, you don't want to have to use it on anything but straight down. And man would you build some muscle with that.
