It's nearly impossible to compete with chromebooks price point, servicability and flexibility to run on many different hardware, most of those are rugged and easier to toss and replace, kids destroy them (physically) yet they continue to rock on for few more months to close the semester. It would be a huge waste to pay $500 per student and get them these glorified ipads without the touchscreen when all they will be using is google classroom type of closed environment with cloud based storage.

I get why apple did this, but they should have done a bit more either on price for non students, or better specs, seriously 8GB of ram? I get why there is no touchscreen, they don't want to kill ipad sales, but really this is basically ipad with a keyboard running MacOS, at least the OS is a huge improvement over terribly crippled iOS, even with the latest version practically making iPad a Macbook Lite, without proper file system it can never replace a laptop, hence "Neo" comes along.
After looking at my niece's Chromebook, I noticed it's not quite up to par with what I was hoping for. I know it's free, but it's not very helpful for kids to use. It might last a long time, but a laptop isn't really made for that kind of use. It's meant to help you learn, not just last. When it gets slow and doesn't work right, it's like the learning is over. My niece doesn't even use it at home. If I ever get a chance to get a better laptop, I'd buy this one for her.

Nothing but a iPad with Mac os. It would have been a perfect opportunity for them to test out a iPad with the keyboard and touch screen. All in one... This is just a very stupid device

What they said I'm sure it's going to sell they got it in fun colors and they're going to get a lot of people's attention who want to have a Mac and even a lower price. I thought the MacBook Air was a good price as it is. But all good

Costco has the dell @ $499.00 after saving ($649 before): Dell 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop - Intel Core i7-1355U - FHD (1920x1080) - 16GB RAM - 1TB SSD - Windows 11. This would be a better deal IMO.

The "good price" is based on location. Where I live, people want top dollars for their macbook airs.
Ever heard of online shopping? It makes local prices moot. Js

What is this, 2010 ? Neo? What a terrible name, ha.
True. 8gb was considered mid range in 2010.

Today, it's E-waste.

This should've had at the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM 12gb memory. 8gb ram, mac os or not is just a joke in 2026, even at $499. Apple is just creating e waste at this point.

Apple finally admitted that 8GB RAM is not enough no matter how optimized macOS is and released the base model Mac Mini M4 with 16 GB of RAM.Now they're backtracking that stance due to the recent DRAM price hikes. 😂
The fact this has so many dislikes is criminal. Yes, a lot of the entry level buyers will be "fine" with 8GB Ram, but even at $499, there is no reason to get a dud that will be chugging from low Ram in less than 3 years.Every time this conversation comes around, people say x GB RAM is fine but unanimously forget their opinion a couple years later when it isn't enough.iPad Pro 2018 with 3GB Ram is an excellent tablet with a still plenty great processor. The iPad is not great because the 3GB Ram... chugs.M1 air runs great mostly but I've had insane swap data written to SSD and terrible battery life once there's lots of memory pressure on the RAM and lots of SSD writing. This was just browsing with 10-20 tabs and not any high demand video editing.8GB RAM on M series chips is a 5 year old configuration at this point and Apple has made 16GB the base for a reason!

I feel like buying a M1 air from ebay or facebook marketplace is a good choice that this as M1 was so good by it-self, also buying a good m1 air will be of just $400

Weighs 50% more than the MacBook. Has a much worse screen. Worse battery life. 30% slower single core performance and 15% slower multi core performance according to Geekbench. You do get more memory and a larger ssd, and a touchscreen. But the Dell is objectively worse in just about every other spec.
