It's nearly impossible to compete with chromebooks price point, servicability and flexibility to run on many different hardware, most of those are rugged and easier to toss and replace, kids destroy them (physically) yet they continue to rock on for few more months to close the semester. It would be a huge waste to pay $500 per student and get them these glorified ipads without the touchscreen when all they will be using is google classroom type of closed environment with cloud based storage.
I get why apple did this, but they should have done a bit more either on price for non students, or better specs, seriously 8GB of ram? I get why there is no touchscreen, they don't want to kill ipad sales, but really this is basically ipad with a keyboard running MacOS, at least the OS is a huge improvement over terribly crippled iOS, even with the latest version practically making iPad a Macbook Lite, without proper file system it can never replace a laptop, hence "Neo" comes along.
What they said I'm sure it's going to sell they got it in fun colors and they're going to get a lot of people's attention who want to have a Mac and even a lower price. I thought the MacBook Air was a good price as it is. But all good
