8gb is less of an issue for most office type usages. the 1 usb 3 (10gb) 1 usb 2 ports without thunderbolt might make a difference to a lot of users though.

I'd be kind of surprised if it only had a year of support left. They were selling M1 units brand new at Walmart very recently as a precursor to the Neo. I doubt it's so difficult for Apple to continue supporting M1 silicon, and it seems like bad form to cut support off for recent purchasers. Even if it stops getting major OS updates, there's still security updates for several years.
They will soon stop selling it by replacing with M2 which has support till 2029. Again, those machines are not mainstream. They are old machine at a budget price.

No. This basically has the same specs as an iPhone 16 Pro
A18 pro cpu, 8 gb RAM

Worth considering for some light video editing and general purpose e-mail/browsing?

Very good callout - honestly the storage is already probably "worth" it (it's an absurd they charge this much, but 256 vs 512 makes a big difference when the OS takes a good chunk already).

The touchid to me makes it a no brainer, unless you have an apple watch already and use that for unlock the ability to use touchid is so so nice.
It's not just for logging into the laptop either - passkeys on websites, for example, require a biometric authentication and without TouchID you won't be able to use it on the laptop.

define "fairly heavy use".
Local software development, video editing, some (admittedly light weight) gaming, and ofc having 50 tabs open at the same time.

12-13" super lightweight yoga type of laptop with OLED would be sweet. MBPs and MBAs are super reliable with excellent battery life, but they've dull and uninspiring at this point. The days of Steve Jobs pulling an MBA out of an envelope feel like a lifetime ago. Apple going cheaper.. for what?

honestly this barely makes any sense to me, you can get something with a core ultra 5, twice the ram, and 4 times the storage for $499 right now, why are we going back to 8gb of ram in 2026
and how long will that laptop last you? i've had a ton of windows laptops. none lasted more than 3-4 years. overheating, driver issues, screen issues, wifi issues, something.
I still have a Macbook Air from 2012 that still works PERFECTLY (after swapping out for a new battery in 2020). Crazy thing? I can still sell it for 100 bucks no problem.
All the windows laptops ive had between then and now? in the trash.
also, are you really comparing an intel chip to Apple Silicon? they're not even in the same league.

The cheapest m4 macbook air on swappa is $750. "Only a little bit more". 50% more?

Look, when a school needs to buy these in bulk they're not going to shop around for a lightly used m4 in bulk. With apple care too, these make a great entry point for literal kids or even parents.

Everyone is complaining about 8gb of ram, but my parents are using a 120gb ssd sata2, 8gb system with an i3 2120 and can literally do everything they need. Many people literally just go to youtube or browse the internet. Swap is fast on a traditional macbook machine compared to a windows machine too. And if you're swapping that much that it'll kill your SSD, then you were never the target audience for this laptop.

It's like there's a market for budget products and you don't have to always build for the elite...?

Well to put it in perspective you sellers like vip outlet sells the m1 macbook air open box for $380 plus 10% off. This a18 pro chip is basically same performance as a m1

Not sure how this is a slick deal with retail pricing, no RAM upgrade options, and no cellular models.
