512GB has Touch ID, base 256GB doesn't FYI. Probably worth the extra $100

Me personally i would just get a lightly used m4 for only a little bit more. Especially with m5 out u can find a lot of good deals on used m4. Better design more ram faster ect

Worth considering for some light video editing and general purpose e-mail/browsing?
What type of editing. LIke tiktok reels, or like vlogs? If you're doing longer videos, with like a dslr/camera/osmo or something I would consider spending more on an air or pro. If that's out of your budget, I would consider an older m1/m2pro which you can find for under $600.

8gb is less of an issue for most office type usages. the 1 usb 3 (10gb) 1 usb 2 ports without thunderbolt might make a difference to a lot of users though.
I mean how many non-business users are really hooking up things externally to their laptops besides a bluetooth mouse?

It's like there's a market for budget products and you don't have to always build for the elite...?
MBAs are cheap and excellent devices for the value. Not all products need to be a race to the bottom, my friend. Apple's value proposition to investors is its margins, start cutting that and funds will look elsewhere.

For anyone complaining about the specs, this will likely run circles around anything else that's new in the $5-600 price range when looking at the complete package and last a lot longer. Yeah, 8GB of RAM and no backlit keyboard is a bummer, but for the intended use which will be mostly web browsing and word processing, it's more than enough. The intended audience here is those who were considering getting a Chromebook or a cheap entry-level Windows laptop. Not those running LLMs, doing a bunch of photo editing, development work etc.My wife has had a base M1 MacBook Air for 4-5 years now and it does everything she needs it to do. Single core on this is significantly better then the M1, with better battery life and longer support to boot. If you need more power, then you know you'll need more power and this isn't the device for you.

Back to the price:
Please notice that you can not only trade-in used Apple laptops, but also Apple watches, Apple tablets, or various phones. Just look for that other option after choosing trade-in "Trade in another type of device"
Couple random devices and their trade-in value:
IPhone 13 Pro Max gets $305 off
iPhone 13 gets $190 off
IPhone 13 mini gets $145 off
IPhone 11 gets $100 off
IPad 10 gets $175 off
IPad Air 5th gen gets $210 off
I bet I'm not the only one with a surplus of old Apple hardware sitting around. Thank you, SD!!

5 of my family members got a new laptops to do basic things in the last two years. The one thing they all wanted and got was a backlit keyboard. Shame this MacBook doesnt have an option for that.

This is a workaround for the lack of a backlit keyboard. Much easier than learning the piano.

Its criminal to put 8gb in 2026 no matter how budget the laptop is.

Not really - it's almost the equivalent of an M1 at half the power https://www.cpubenchmark.net/comp...8-3200-MHz
M1?? We're at M5. M1 is way behind. Then even M4 and 5 have different versions like Pro/Max.

Have you used a mac before? 8GB is plenty even if you run games like World of Warcraft. You don't buy this budget macbook to do video editing obviously. It's only like $600. This is good for doing basic stuff.

Apple finally admitted that 8GB RAM is not enough no matter how optimized macOS is and released the base model Mac Mini M4 with 16 GB of RAM.Now they're backtracking that stance due to the recent DRAM price hikes. 😂
It has the same SOC I have in my phone. 8 works great for every day use.
