and your saying this because?
Specs:
200-meter water resistance and the standard G-Shock shock-resistant construction.
It has a neutral digital face with larger-than-average digits, making it very easy to read at a glance compared to other G-Shock models.
Includes 31 world time zones (48 cities), a 24-hour countdown timer, a 1/100-second stopwatch, and 5 daily alarms (including one snooze alarm).
The stainless steel band uses spring bars for the links, which makes it easier to resize at home compared to some other metal-band watches.

If you're into high end watches it's not for you.
but if you want a "workhorse" ....

Don't forget it also syncs to the atomic clock feed from WWVB and apparently 5 other sources around the world so you can sync almost anywhere you can take that thing. Pretty slick, worth at least a little money.

Why would people buy this when a smartwatch can cost half as much? The only possible advantages are batteries that last for years (with no recharging needed) and super durability. But these are not the top concerns of most consumers. Most prefer functionality and customizability.
Would you take your smart watch scuba diving, or even surfing?

I'm a big Casio fine, especially G-Shocks but also many others, but I'll say this is a bizarre design for an MT-G. It's strange they're still selling it in 2026.

I bought this for $99 in 2003. I remember the CTL1616 cell died after 2 years, and had trouble finding a new CTL1616 and used a CR1616 for a few months as a stopgap solution.

I came in to say the same thing, I got one of these around 2005, one of my least worn Casios. Its just a big and awkward watch, it feels really top heavy and its really fat, snagging on shirt sleves. I hung on to mine for a long time and finally sold it, still amazed at how much I got for it.

There must be more Mission Impossible Tom Cruise fans than I realized. This is basically an updated version of that watch.

I disagree, it's still a shill post because this watch should be a lot cheaper than it is.
  • The display on this was already outdated when it came out, it has a weird hovering/shadowing effect that other models like the GW-M5610U don't have.
  • It's not truly a metal watch, it's still mostly plastic except for some links on the band. Not even the whole band.
  • GW-M5610U has the same features but in the classic square design and much better aesthetics and more legible screen. It actually does go on sale for the same price or sometimes lower around the holidays and is normally around $10 more.
  • And most of all, this is the normal price of this watch and has been for several years. Which is the biggest point in making this a shill post.
