Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door on Switch is a modern remake of the GameCube classic, with updated graphics, HD presentation, and enough added touches to make it feel refreshed. The Switch version also adds extra bosses and warp pipes that reduce backtracking, while keeping the game's witty story, timing based combat, and charming cast intact. The main tradeoff is performance, since the remake runs at 30 frames per second instead of the original 60. At around $30, it lands as a strong value for a beloved RPG with some modernization, though the extra content is fairly limited.

  • The Switch remake includes new warp pipes that reduce backtracking during the adventure.

  • The Switch version modernizes the original with new engine work, coding, models, and textures.

  • The Switch release is portable and presented in HD compared with the older GameCube version.

  • The deal price is supported by multiple retailers offering around $29.99 with free shipping options.

  • The Switch remake runs at 30fps while the original GameCube version ran at 60fps.

  • The additional content is limited to one single badge, which may feel light for some players.

  • Remake changes can disappoint players who expected the combat mechanism to stay intact.

  • The game may feel only good rather than great, even when the $30 price is attractive.

Wow, I am surprised by a lot of the negativity that this deal is getting! However, I understand why some people have the opinion that they do. Not all re-releases, re-masters, ports, or whatever they may be are created equal!

Just sticking to Nintendo, I personally consider the "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" HD release on Wii U to be an awful, lazy port, especially compared to Wind Waker's HD re-release, which involved an enormous amount of effort.

The TTYD release on the Switch is more like Wind Waker HD! An incredibly huge amount of work went into modernizing this game. It was, essentially, a wholly new game when it comes to the time and resources invested in developing it, with the previous game existing just as a guideline. New engine, coding, models, textures, you name it!

I believe a lot of folks who believe this is not a deal may not understand that. The level of effort that went into making this is as much as (and in some cases, is more than) there would be put into any other brand new modern game.

Now, if that is still not enough for them, I understand. Everybody can spend their money on what they want! To me though, this is a wonderful deal on an excellent game that another generation gets a chance to enjoy!
It's just all of the same people that come out of the woodwork when there is a game remake/remaster and whine about how it should only be $5-10 and anything more is a ripoff and Nintendo is evil, etc.

That's what I'm saying! All nintendo has been doing is remaking old games and Marking them as $60! Imagine paying $60 for God of War 2, for the Playstation 4 console, when the ps5 is out! Like that's crazy!!!
I tend to disagree.
Nintendo is releasing many new games
But they are also remaking the best of their catalog on their newer consoles.
Not all are great, but the majority are. They are updated, they are fun to play.
You don'thave to buy at 60.00 but some do because they want it, others wait foelr sales and thats me generally.
My kids love games I played 20 yeara ago.. so all good for me.

The GameCube version is 20 years old.

This is a remake with graphical improvements and additional content. It's also available on a modern console.
Big deal. I can do the same on my PC handheld. Lame AF for the ridiculous price.
