Since this is split phase, could each leg of the 120v be wired to a subpanel to create a 220v breaker that could be wired into a nema plug? Would like to make a 240v charging station for an ev with batteries charged from solar.

That is literally the point, yes.

Could this be used for a ups type backup with a battery and plugged into a regular 120v outlet?

5 kW × 5 hours = 25 kWh per day

Now compare that with a 75 kWh EV battery.

Charging a 75 kWh car with 5 kW solar (5 sun hours)

  • Energy needed: 75 kWh
  • Solar produced per day: ~25 kWh

75 ÷ 25 = about 3 days

✅ Result:
  • About 3 full sunny days to charge from 0–100%.

Real-world adjustment

Because of inverter losses, charging losses, and weather:
  • Expect 3–3.5 days in practice.

Example EVs with ~75 kWh batteries

  • Tesla Model Y Long Range
  • Ford Mustang Mach‑E Extended Range
  • Volkswagen ID.4

Quick rule

With 5 kW solar and 5 sun hours:
  • ~25 kWh/day = about 80–100 miles of driving per day for most EVs.

If you just want to use this inverter for built 240V charging station for EV, actually you don't need to go through subpanel. This inverter has 1L, 2L, NEUTRAL, and GROUND TERMINALS. You could see those terminals in the picture of main post. So you could wired OUTPUT (1L, 2L, N, G) directly to NEMA PLUG to charge your EV. Of course, you have connect the batteries to the inverter terminal as well.

For people use for house backup, you could hardwire directly to breaker panel box. Or like I did, install NEMA POWER BOX direct to 50 AMP BREAKER MAIN PANEL BOX.

Of course, it could use as a regular 120V outlet as well. But this type inverter is mostly use for HOME BACKUP, EV CHARGE STATION, or OFF GRID POWER. If you want to use as UPS 120V OUTLET for a small device like computer, router, and etc. You should get a PORTABLE POWER STATION. That is must easier than using this type inverter for small device UPS.

I saw this deal small portable power station sale $153 with 512Wh. You could use this for UPS small device like computer, router, and etc.
