I've never found any assorted package of screws to be useful. They'll contain a few that you will use and the rest just sit there forever. There's just too many different types and use-cases to be able to offer any kind of practical assortment. Instead, buy a cheap sorter box and fill it up as you go. Pay the big box store for storing what you don't need and save yourself the cost and space of unneeded material.

No such thing IMO. You need to determine the work and use case and purchase accordingly. I'm doing a bunch of wood replacement, stucco repairs, concrete forms and closing eve type of work and I have large buckets/ packages of 1.5", 2", 3" and 3.5" on hand. Hundreds to thousands, but when I start getting low, I buy a large qty because the cost of multiple purchases of lower qty's like 250 are sometime 5X or more expensive. I know I am going to use them though in those sizes. Less than 1.5" is typically a more specialized fastener for my work.
