I think the music thing is a gimmick.

We put the hub on the ground under our 7.5' tree and run both strings up the center 1/3 of the tree. Then use 1 strand on top 2/3 and 1 on the bottom 1/3. It's great light density. Once you use the scanning feature via the app to locate all the lights everything syncs up.
Also consider the RGBW version.
We've had this for 5ish years now. Paid $400 for it so we use it from Halloween until January. All lights still work.
You could also probably string these around a room or on something else but I have never tried. I think the effects begin from the hub outward and are duplicated on each string so keep that in mind if you don't plan to scan them.

Other issues over the year - used to be able to connect them to my wifi. No longer, just not possible. You can log into the light's wifi but each light has it's own wifi so you can't connect to both at the same time, and its complicated to just get the light to broadcast the wifi signal. Oh and if you disconnect, you might as well start over.
I would never recommend these lights as you can tell. I recognize that this is my experience, not necessarily the same for others, but I like to share so that people can consider what tolerance for BS they're willing to put up with
We got our twinkly lights ~3 years ago for outside use and used them for 2 years (only from Halloween to New Years). We had no problems at all. Suddenly this year I set them up and plug them in and they don't work. I go back and forth with support and figure out that the controller itself is dead (After getting a new Power adaptor and testing multiple outlets). This is the cheap plastic knob with a button that splits into the 2 subsets of lights.
What does Twinkly offer me after their product failed after only 2 years of holiday use? A 10% off coupon for a new set from their store.
We really liked the lights and still have a Twinkly tree going strong, but I can not recommend a company that cheaps out on the controller aspect for $200+ lights and won't replace it when it breaks. I can understand if we were running these year round and storing them in non-ideal positions, but we ran them just like they recommended and they broke after 2 years.
