If you're going to hide an AirTag in your car I recommend removing the speaker on the AirTag. I've did it for my car and 2 for my parents' cars, and it took about 2 minutes total to do for each: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vAQNedIa0o

The range is much better in the second generation. I had the first generation and it is only good for less than 20 feet. Sometimes, I left my wallet in the car on the drive way and my air tags cannot locate it. The problem fixed with the second generation. $5 difference definitely worth it.

It's people who don't bother to read the description. Or they say "Well, I could just buy 9 CR2032 batteries and replace them for cheaper." Yes, you could do that, but a lot of people will take this product and bury/hide it in their car so it can't easily be found, and don't want to have to dig it out every year to change the battery (or 6 months as some AirTag batteries I've used have only lasted). "Well, a thief is going to do a search for it with their phone and it's going to beep and they'll find it!" Instructions are on YouTube and elsewhere about how to easily remove the speaker on the AirTag so it makes no sound at all. Takes about 2 minutes total to do. "Well, how are you going to remember where you put it in the car?" I wrote it down in my files...

I have an AirTag with an Elevation Lab extended battery case in my car's trunk. It helps me find my car in large parking lots or when I park on the street.

If you need this many, this is a much better deal than paying $14 each for Gen 1. Even without a Costco membership, this is $21 for Gen 2. I think that's well worth it. If you don't need this many, the Gen 1 is OK though.

I believe the recommendation is to use lithium AA's in these. They have a very long stable life and are less prone to leaking/failure than traditional alkaline batteries. From the items description:
  • Uses two AA batteries (NOT INCLUDED). We recommend Energizer Ultimate Lithium for longest life. We do not recommend alkaline batteries.

Don't understand the downvotes - this was something I saw a couple of months back on SD and think it is a neat product.

It's an accessory that lets you keep it powered longer without having to swap out the tiny battery. Like in a car, or a bike, etc.

Anyone got suggestions for good airtag holders? I bought some cheap ones that have held up that came with the thick flat key rings like the ones in the 2nd product photo...problem is I don't recall where I got them from.

If you have an iPhone - it automatically records where you left your vehicle - and you can use Maps to locate it.
For on street parking this works like a charm - I have never used it for Parking Garage and I don't know if it provides directional/distance to vehicle like the Airtags provides.

how loud are the beeps now if out of range - the thieves can locate and get rid of it-- so the use case is diminished.

Same deal at Sam's Club which works out well as I was able to apply my Sam's cash from the plus sign up perk.

And that's why the manufacturer recommends using Lithium Double AA's which are far less likely to corrode than alkaline batteries are. Lithium batteries also less susceptible thank alkaline batteries are to cold weather. The company that makes the extended battery case claims that Lithium batteries should last up to 10 years in their device. I can't verify that claim as I've only had one of their cases in my car for a little over a year, so I will have to get back to you on that in 9 years, or sooner if it doesn't make it 9 years. It was also very cold this year where I live, with many days near or below freezing, so we'll see how it goes given the temperature extremes a lot of us now experience.

Use lithium AA batteries. Apparently this will run the AirTag for 10 years.
