Is it possible it was a different configuration? There are a lot of options for this watch which makes it confusing.

If you want it to, it could also stay on. I tends to think this is for those who want always on display

How are people feeling about the move away from MIP screens? I always thought that was one of the best things about Garmin watches.

You can still get it with MIP and those also have solar charging under the screen. MIP is superior for me.

Regardless of product, the answer to "why are they changing it?" is always "manufacturing cost"

I got the refurbished version of this watch on Amazon. Holding up good almost 6 months I bump it scrape it on things and the glass is crazy strong no scratches not even on the finish. Lasts a long time with screen on and almost a month with it off. I love it

I'm curious to know how people who use the new screens feel about it.

MIP screens are great when outdoors, but have poor visibility indoors without activating the backlight.
OLED screens are okay outdoors, but more visible indoors since they always has a backlight.
Battery life and solar charging was a benefit of the MIP screens in older models, but every generation, the battery improves, and the 51mm version of this watch still lasts 2+ weeks on a single charge for me in smartwatch mode with daily activities.
Redlight mode on this watch is a nighttime viewing mode that doesn't blind everyone near you, and it's something that can't be done on with MIP screens.
Overall, I think it is fair to say demand for OLED is what is driving Garmin away from MIP screens. It's not that they won't produce those screens anymore, just in more niche models.
I'm okay with OLED on the 51mm version of this watch because battery life is still acceptable.

thanks for the perspective. I think I may get another MIP. I've been wearing an Apple watch recently and I hate how it distracts my 2 year old. i've had to stop wearing it around her. Didn't have this problem with my old Forerunner.

Beware of buying from Amazon…
I ordered one last week and it arrived without the protective sticker on the screen (you can check unboxing videos on YouTube to see how it should look). I returned it immediately and placed another order.
The replacement arrived today—with the same issue, even the package came with a ramdom tape on to "seal" the tab.
My guess is Epix Pro is a previous-generation product that's been circulating in the market for long and Amazon is infamous for mixing returned items with new inventory from different sellers. Unlike Apple products, Garmin packaging doesn't have an irreversible seal, so it's hard to confidently tell whether the watch is truly new. You're left looking for small clues like a missing screen protector, fingerprints, or wear on the charging port.
If you'd rather not deal with that uncertainty, I'd recommend buying directly from Garmin or a local brick-and-mortar store where you can inspect the product in person.
