Perfect middle-of-the-road solution for the active person who wants GPS and heart rate monitoring during exercise, and full sleep tracking at night!

Unlike popular competitors like Whoop, Oura, Fitbit, Apple and Google options:
  • Does NOT require a subscription ($70-300/year)
  • CAN connect to a chest or wrist Heart Rate Monitor strap (still much more accurate during vigorous exercise than any watch-based optical HRM)
  • Offers a full featured online website for data analysis/tracking galore
  • Excellent battery life, 3-4 days between charges with regular exercise, up to 11 days without

Garmins product lines baffle me a little. Does the fitness tracking on this watch differ greatly from others like the forerunner?

Forerunners are more dedicated to hardcore runners/athletes so I'd expect even more abstruse data/detail and capabilities. The VA line is more of a general use do-it-all thing for casual athletes who also want better all around functionality with sleep tracking and overall wellness.

It's been awhile since I used a Garmin, but has the app been improved in the past 5 years? That was my only issue with it. It seemed like it was an afterthought when they created all these great watches. As someone who switches between iOS and Android often, it was my only option years ago.

I didn't use the Garmin app 5 years ago so I couldn't really answer your question. I can say that I have no complaints about the current version, which I use both on Android phones/tablets and Windows computers. Definitely kills the Fitbit and Google Pixel apps.
