This Acer PM161Q portable monitor stands out as a lightweight second screen for travel, desk expansion, and phone based setups. It pairs well with a Pixel 9 or Raspberry Pi, can be powered from a phone at reduced brightness, and gets full power plus device charging from wall power. The integrated kickstand and VESA mount make it flexible for permanent use, and the screen is described as bright enough with little IPS bleed. The main knocks are its 1080p LCD panel, modest brightness, and fragile feel, so it fits small portable tasks better than demanding display use.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. It can run from a phone, but brightness is reduced when powered that way. Using wall power gives full brightness and can also charge the connected device, which makes it practical for travel setups.

  • It is a 250-nit 1080p LCD, so it is not a high-end bright panel, but it is still described as surprisingly bright for a $45 portable monitor. It is best suited to small-use cases like a secondary Spotify, Discord, or YouTube screen rather than demanding display work.

  • Yes. It works well with a Pixel 9 and a foldable Bluetooth keyboard to create a laptop-like setup for travel, and it is also useful for conferences, business trips, and hotel stays where a cheaper screen is less risky to leave behind.

  • Yes, it has VESA mounting support, so it can be attached to a monitor arm instead of relying only on the built-in kickstand. That makes it more useful as a permanent secondary display.

  • The built-in stand likely does not support portrait mode. A separate adjustable stand or arm can be used if you want to rotate it for portrait use.

With that thin bezel, how can it be 17.3" wide with a 15.6" diagonal screen? The diagonal should longer than the width!

I have this one. Perfect portable monitor. I use it plugged into my phone and works very well. It will power the monitor from your phone, but at a reduced brightness. Power the monitor from the wall and you get full power plus charging your plugged in device. I WOULD suggest getting it from the Acer official ebay store. SAME unit, with a 2yr Allstate warranty.

Wasn't the only complaint that it's fragile and dim? Not expecting OLED for $45 though. Good to know a phone can power it.

A bit less weight, and this is cheaper than a laptop so if it gets lost/stolen it's not as huge of a loss.
  • use the screen for multiple devices or secondary monitor
  • not being locked to just landscape
  • smaller devices than a laptop can use it

We've seen so many of these portable monitors on sale. Hard to know which ones are the best. Do they come in OLED and 4K, with stereo speakers?
they do and even touch/stylus support ( depending on OS )

let your usecase define best or else you'll over pay in the portable monitor space.

If you have to lug a screen and a keyboard, why not just use a laptop?
I don't have one of these but I do have a similar monitor. Sometimes it comes in handy if you're using a laptop to work with somebody else at the same time, or a group. I don't use it often but it does come in handy sometimes.

If you can get by with 13.3, $100 OLED new. Not a jaw dropping price based on historical, but I see them for $80 - 85 sometimes direct from INNOCN.

It doesn't come as a surprise that it's fragile. It's a 15" LCD monitor. How durable should it be?

Frequently returned doesn't mean a product isn't worth it. From reading Amazon and non-amazon reviews it seems like a mismatch of expectations, like gaming due to refresh rate or relying on the lacking speakers. The majority of people I see discussing it are satisfied.

It was just an option for someone humorously lamenting the ACER not being OLED at $45. Know your use case is the same advice I said in my previous comment.

Had a portable monitor for many years now and the prices are getting so low. So many uses that are not obvious to someone who hasn't owned one before. Work travel, lugging into receivers, preparing talks/lessons when not at my desk, etc. Good name with decent specs. Thx!

Can you use this monitor in portrait mode? The kickstand looks like horizontal-only.
Well yes. If on laptop just change orientation in settings
