Step into the rarefied world of Right Bank royalty with the Château Pétrus Vertical Collection (1971–1981)—an extraordinary 11-bottle set comprising one 750ml bottle from each vintage spanning this pivotal decade. This remarkable vertical offers a unique lens into a transformative era for one of Bordeaux's most iconic and enigmatic estates, capturing the evolution of Pétrus through varied growing seasons, winemaking shifts, and its emergence onto the global stage of fine wine prestige.
Perched atop the famed blue clay soils of the Pomerol plateau, Château Pétrus has long stood apart—crafting Merlot-based wines of exceptional depth, sensuality, and longevity. Though unclassified, Pétrus commands reverence equal to Bordeaux's First Growths and has become synonymous with rarity, elegance, and uncompromising quality.
This vertical traces Pétrus's stylistic arc through the 1970s—a decade marked by climatic challenges, emerging precision, and quiet triumphs. From the powerful structure of 1975 to the refined grace of 1978, each bottle offers a glimpse into the estate's enduring identity and the vintage-specific character that defines truly great Bordeaux.
(1x) Château Petrus 1971 750ml
A benchmark from the early 1970s, the 1971 Pétrus remains a deeply expressive wine that mesmerizes with its richness, complexity, and elegance. With its silky texture and a layered bouquet of dark fruit, spice, and earthy sweetness, it strikes a perfect harmony between opulence and finesse.
Critic Tasting Notes: "This wine has been seemingly fully mature since the mid- to late seventies. It is a seductive, opulent vintage for Petrus. The color now is a dark garnet with considerable amber at the rim. The incredible nose of Christmas fruitcake intermixed with mocha, jammy kirsch, and black currants is followed by a silky textured, full-bodied, very opulent wine that is still totally intact. The tannins have totally dissipated, and the wine is an unctuous, seductive Petrus that is certainly one of the vintages that is most delicious and compelling. A sensational wine and probably the wine of the vintage." – Robert M. Parker, Jr., Wine Advocate (95 pts)
