Personally, I'd stick with the older router with FreshTomato. I've been running tomato based firmwares for years and only been disappointed when I've used anything else with a smaller feature set, like no VLAN support. I did and ended up using my old rock-solid FreshTomato loaded RT-AC5300 as the router for my wired network one one subnet range (home is wired with gigabit Ethernet) and the "new" 6 ghz router as just an access point for wireless devices on another subnet so neither got overburdened or had overlapping IP addresses, which kept happening on Asus-Merlin on the new router by itself. The "new one" is a RT-BE7200 which I really needed to get longer range to cover the whole house and my workshop out back. The new one works great now to run a 5 ghz wireless network, a hidden 2 ghz network for internet of things devices, and a small wireless guest network, but neither router could do the job alone.

Thanks for the Great write up! I'll keep this router for awhile. Looking forward to the Gi.lnet Flint 4 router.

So far Fresh Tomato has been a nice upgrade. Tons of settings. Though one issue I'm having is the 2.4 and 5 gbz bands will randomly disappear and not appear under wifi as a selection. Reappears in about a minute. Seems to happen more at night. There are 8 to 12 networks in the area. Curious if there's interference from other routes in the area. I have it set to auto for band selection. Any advice? Thanks!

Waiting on the Flint 4 as well. My only gripe is lack of DD-WRT support.
