Recently updated my Netgear R7000 router to Fresh Tomato because of vulnerabilities but been looking at this router for awhile.
Personally, I'd stick with the older router with FreshTomato. I've been running tomato based firmwares for years and only been disappointed when I've used anything else with a smaller feature set, like no VLAN support. For my money, the 6 ghz "tri-band" isn't something I'd use anytime soon and it has a limited You'll also be taking a huge step down in tweakable settings since this model doesn't even have Asus-Merlin firmware support for this BE model series. It doesn't have the 6 gh range, but if it's going to be used in an open air area like in most houses with limited walls between the clients and this router, I'd probably want the 6 ghz later. I would put another $90 into it and get the ASUS RT-BE92U BE9700 model on the other thread today for $189 personally if you really need to upgrade. I did and ended up using my old rock-solid FreshTomato loaded RT-AC5300 as the router for my wired network one one subnet range (home is wired with gigabit Ethernet) and the "new" 6 ghz router as just an access point for wireless devices on another subnet so neither got overburdened or had overlapping IP addresses, which kept happening on Asus-Merlin on the new router by itself. The "new one" is a RT-BE7200 which I really needed to get longer range to cover the whole house and my workshop out back. The new one works great now to run a 5 ghz wireless network, a hidden 2 ghz network for internet of things devices, and a small wireless guest network, but neither router could do the job alone.
