It's a catch 22.

https://nanoreview.net/en/gpu-com...ple-m4-gpu

The GPU on the Mac Mini M4 chip is 20-30% stronger than the now-aging 680m.

https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/com..._pro_6850h

The CPU on the Mac Mini M4 is 40% stronger in single core performance, and 10% stronger in multicore performance.

The Mac Mini has 16GB memory vs the 24GB memory here (all of it is soldered down on BOTH options).

Basically, unless you're looking to play Fortnite or Overwatch (which the PC will definitely do on low-medium settings), the value is all on that Mac Mini M4 at Microcenter, if you're getting it within $50 of this. I say catch 22, because while its stronger for gaming, your number of games is less.
The CPU being 40% stronger on single core means all emulation (from Switch downward) will be crushed under the foot of the Mac Mini M4.

My opinion, would be get this. You have more options with this, but that's just my two cents.

This is very dependent on use case. Mac Mini is a way better desktop replacement unless you hate Mac OS or have compatibility issues with Mac software. This is a great HTPC for some light gaming and emulation, which is what I bought it for a few weeks back when it was about the same price. This would also be a good system to play with Linux distros and/or some server functions that require more oomf than the more basic mini pcs.

If you love MacOS, sure. If you want flexibility to stay on Windows (naw dawg) or open Linux and have much better options? Get this.

does the mac mini allow you to add storage? I'm not a apple person, just never was they tend to be static in development and upgrades are usually Verboten which to me is the antithesis of PC culture, always being able to improve, something Steve Jobs was all about. IF the Mac allows you to add storage like this one does, it would be a hard choice even for me. But if it does not allow you to add NVME drives and expand your storage and forces you to the cloud like so many of their devices do, I could not run away fast enough.

Do you have a link to this deal, or is it in-person only? I don't see it on their website. Thanks

I admit that I'm not a fan of Macs, but I'm trying to be as unbiased as I can be. It looks like...

  • This includes more RAM and storage, along with dual 2.5 GbE. When it comes to expansion, this also include OCuLink and a pair of empty M.2 slots for storage. x86/x64 should have better support in some areas.
  • A Mac Mini should have a more powerful CPU and GPU. It provides expansion in the form of ample USB and Thunderbolt ports. You can natively run macOS without jumping through any hoops, and I assume you could throw Windows or Linux on it if you wanted. Both short and long term support should also much better for the Mac Mini.
You need to include details about what your use case is. There is no clear winner. You should also be honest about what your expectations are and how much you value your time. Over the long term, the simplicity of the product and the better support from Apple can make a massive difference in favor of the Mac Mini.

(Edit: Clarified in a few places where I wrote "mini" and meant "Mac Mini".)

I'm pretty sure the answer is "No, but..."

You can add fast NVMe storage externally using Thunderbolt 4. I suspect that the performance over Thunderbolt would be really good with max speeds of 40 mbps. Even with tons of bandwidth, random I/O should be much better from the internal drive. But this normally works fine since you'd most likely have your OS and applications on the internal storage.

This is an added cost. A simple 10 gbps USB-C enclosure for an NVMe drive, which is likely plenty fast for most use cases, is probably $15 or less. But something that takes full advantage of Thunderbolt 4 will cost a lot more. On the other hand, this type of solution is so common that you can look up "Mac Mini dock" on Amazon and find docks built specifically for this. Many include internal M.2 slots to provide expansion.

I'd personally prefer the Aoostar since I love to tinker and I'd likely end up using it in my home lab as a hypervisor. And for this scenario where I'm hosting multliple services on a system tucked away somewhere in my basement, I benefit from using onboard M.2 slots. But for my desktop, if I wanted to add bulk storage, even basic USB 3.0 with 5 gbps speeds would be fine.

One is a non-name brand Chinese mini-PC. One is one of the biggest brand name manufacturers on the planet (that isn't going anywhere) with very high QA and build quality tolerances (and zero chance of hardware embedded spyware) for the same price as the non-name brand.
All this just depends on the application (as everyone has already pointed out.)
If you're looking to run Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, etc - then the choice is made for you and it isn't the Mac Smilie (Unless you want to run those OSes in Containers/VMs)

I plugged a Samsung external SSD into the back and the read/write is the same as the internal drive.I played Baldurs Gate 3 from the external drive if that gives you an idea for the speed.

not related to technical aspects of the item but beware of the seller, I have placed the order with same seller in the previous deal on 03/04 and till now there is update about shipping, on the product page it says shipped from US but no update. Reached out to AliExpress customer care multiple times same robotic one way answers. No matter what you ask their response is always what they want to say. I am not sure but may be an AI is responding.

Sorry to hear that. I ordered the same model without the ssd from that previous listing. The tracking number Aliexpress provided turned out to be trackable from Amazon's shipping services, and it came from an Amazon warehouse in so I was really surprised to receive it in 3 days.

Thank you for the response! I have never received any update on my order. it was supposed to be shipped by 03/12 but still no idea. Even now it shows Estimated delivery date: Mar 12, 2026. AliExpress team doesn't even have a clue. Pathetic service. this is my first order and needless to say this will be my last too.
