Community Reviews

The TCL QM8K comes across as a bright-room mini LED TV that delivers strong black levels, vivid HDR, and better glare handling than competing sets in the same price range. It is especially appealing for large-screen viewing, with the 85 inch and 98 inch sizes drawing praise for movie nights and for replacing projectors in regular use. The main caveat is value, since the price has hovered around these levels for months and past sales were notably lower. Upscaling and image processing also trail Sony and LG on standard TV, and bright-room blacks can turn gray in dark scenes.

  • The QM8K can deliver stronger 4K HDR performance than competing Sony models, including higher peak brightness and improved colors.

  • The QM8K can perform much better in bright rooms than an OLED, with dark scenes holding up better under light exposure.

  • The QM8K can offer better glare handling and anti-reflective screen performance than a Bravia 5 comparison in the same size class.

  • The QM8K can provide better local dimming dynamic range and deeper blacks than a Bravia 5 comparison in dark-room viewing.

  • Dark scenes can look grey in bright rooms, which can make blacks resemble IPS-like performance under light.

  • The 85" QM8K may not be a killer deal because it has reportedly sold around $1,800 in late November and December and around $2,000 for a short period in February.

  • Standard TV upscaling and high-bitrate 4K HDR processing can look soft on the 98" model, leading to a return in favor of a Sony Bravia 9.

  • The 75" QM8K can develop dead pixels and a line through half the screen within about one month, creating replacement inconvenience.

cant compare to projector, i have 83 behind a retractable screen(120") and projector blows away the tv everytime. tv for regular watching, projector for movies
No way. Even in a pitch black room you can't get inky blacks. In a bright room, that most of us have, a entry level TV will look better.

Sad how we are seeing virtual monopolies on tv mfg. Yet another reason prices have firmed across the industy.

I've got an 85" Bravia 7. Have you had any issues with glowing clouds and bands around the border in certain black-heavy images? I literally had to sue Sony in order to get anything done about it.
I haven't had those issues. I think the B9 has more dimming zones.

The QM8Ks vs the U8QGs are not at the same level as I sadly discovered at Best Buy the other day. However, they are a better deal if you aren't super picky about quality - this Hisense generation isn't 'bad', but the TCL's are objectively better.
Reviewing demo content at Best Buy is fools gold. Not saying you're wrong, I know nothing about the U8QG, just be mindful the manufacturers and Best Buy trick people everyday with demo reels in store. Unfortunately its almost impossible to really see what these TV can do without buy them.

No projector is coming close to what a high end miniLED or OLED TV can do in terms of brightness, contrast, color depth and blacks. There is a reason everyone is buying 100" miniLED TVs and not projectors. Projectors have greatly improved but the image quality isn't comparable to a high end TV.

This price just keeps bouncing here and higher, I think I'll wait for it to drop a bit further now that spring is right upon us
Same here, been watching it between 4k and 3k, just hope it gets lower since new models are out.....

Sure, a projector has the advantage when it comes to size. If that's your sole criteria for a good viewing experience, then that works.

Saying it "blows it away" isn't really an argument, it doesn't explain why. If you mean immersion from a bigger image, sure, that's a preference. But in terms of actual picture quality, like contrast, black levels, brightness control, and consistency, an 83" OLED is objectively stronger than a mid-range projector like the BenQ W4100i.
Most people who own an 83" OLED wouldn't trade it for a projector as their primary display, because it delivers a more reliable, higher-quality image in everyday use. A projector can feel more cinematic in the right setup, but that's not the same as "blowing it away."

Huh...TV prices have been in free fall for years now

65" OLEd's under $1000
65" QLEDs ( of good quality) for $800

TCL and Hisense have really changed the game
depending on what this new RGB LED looks like the standards QLED's will even drop lower than this year
