I bought a relative a Sangean weather alert radio a few years ago. Forget using batteries. It eats right through them from constantly scanning for alerts. You have to have it plugged in the wall. If power goes out, the unit still eats through those batteries in half a day. I'm assuming these are all like that. Make sure your 110v plug is secured in the wall.
When I worked maintenance in a nursing home way back, each nurse station had a simple rock solid weather alert plugged in. Went off every time. No endless extras. Just a slim unit with antenae. They obsoleted and got rid of them. Not sure if that was because analog to digital switch?
