you're not supposed to subject these to sub-freezing temps and you're absolutely NOT supposed to charge them when that cold.
My guy, this smells more like user error.

Looks pretty heavy. Although I'm sure it'd add a lot of range to my Segway scooter, I'm not sure it's worth the trade off 🤔

I bought one of these from the recent deal and I will say I am not very happy with it and it will be getting returned more than likely. DOES NOT WORK at all in the cold above 0f so not even that cold left in my truck over night power fully drained and wouldn't charge for hours

There aren't meant to be left outside at below freezing temps.

at 58 pounds it's portable/stationary storage, not a range extender for a scooter..

The BMS will trigger and stop charging the battery near the freezing point temperature.

Bought the cube 1000 during one of these sales. It's solid. I've put it through high discharge, AC charge, and solar charge tests and it didn't have any glitches. I've got a few ecoflows that start to do weird things at the limits of their specs, this segway cube just worked. I've only owned it for a few months but so far I'm impressed.

User error - this battery is not intended for freezing temps. These are good for what they are. High quality batteries, well constructed, good protection, and easily expandable upto 5kwh. I noticed Segway recently removed the webpage for the expansion packs, so this may be a discontinued product.

Segway is proud of their cubes. Watch the torture they put them through in their YT video:

Is he using the Cold Steel Special Force shovel from the front page deal?

Extra range AND a seat? I don't see how you couldn't buy it.

Is there any batteries that are more suitable for colder temps?

LiFePO4 batteries can generally be discharged when cold but can not be charged below 0F. I don't know any of these power stations that would be any better or worse than any other in the cold off the top of my head but there are some LiFePO4 batteries that come with an internal warmer that when cold will automatically heat themselves up.

AI Overview

Charging LiFePO4 batteries below 0°C (32°F)
causes permanent, irreversible damage due to lithium plating on the anode, which reduces capacity and creates safety hazards. While you can generally discharge in cold temperatures, charging must stop below 0°C. Use specialized heated batteries or smart BMS systems for low-temperature operation.

Key Rules for Sub-Freezing (Below
/
)
  • Never Charge Below
: Charging at sub-freezing temperatures causes lithium ions to plate on the anode surface rather than intercalating into it, creating needle-like structures (dendrites) that can lead to internal short circuits and thermal runaway.
    Large Battery +1
  • Reduced Charge Rate: If special, low-temperature charging is not used, standard cells should not be charged at all. Some, however, argue that very low charge rates might be acceptable at slightly below 0, but this is highly risky.
    DIY Solar Power Forum +2
  • Discharging is Allowed: LiFePO4 batteries can generally be discharged in cold conditions, though performance (voltage and capacity) may be reduced.

  • BMS Protection: Most high-quality LiFePO4 batteries include a Battery Management System (BMS) that automatically shuts down charging in freezing conditions to prevent damage.

Damages and Risks
  • Irreversible Capacity Loss: Lithium plating reduces the available lithium for energy storage, permanently lowering the capacity.
  • Internal Short Circuits: Dendrites formed from plating can puncture the separator between the anode and cathode, causing failure.
Endless Sphere DIY EV Forum +2
Best Practices
  • Use Heated Batteries: Some batteries have internal heaters that warm the cells to a safe temperature before charging begins, as discussed on DIY Solar Power Forum.
  • Insulation: Keep batteries in insulated compartments.
  • Store in a Warmer Area: If possible, move the battery to a warmer, enclosed space during winter to avoid these issues entirely.

Was thinking of getting something in case of power outage for my apartment. Was gonna pull the trigger on the AFERIY but gonna go with this one because you can expand the battery later if you want.
