The Era 100 stands out as a compact Sonos speaker that sounds bigger than its size, with real bass and easy whole home audio use. Refurbished units have arrived sealed or in pristine condition, and the Sonos refurb packaging and full 2 year warranty add confidence. The USB C port can be used with Sonos' line in adapter to hook up a record player, though the turntable needs a built in or added preamp. For home theater surrounds, it works best as a paired set, while the Era 300 is mainly the step up for Atmos and larger rooms.
Apartment listeners wanting a compact whole-home speaker, because it can fill a room with real bass and group easily with other Sonos zones.
Record-player owners who want to stream vinyl around the house, because the USB-C line-in setup can feed a turntable into the Sonos system.
Home theater buyers who want a standalone speaker now and surrounds later, because a single unit works well for music before adding a second for surround pairing.
Small-room surround setups that do not need Atmos height effects, because the smaller footprint is easier to place and the sound is still satisfying.
People who need a larger, more immersive surround speaker, because the bigger model is described as better for Atmos and more expansive playback.
Home theater fans chasing Atmos height effects, because the speaker lacks upfiring drivers and is not the stronger surround choice for Atmos content.
Buyers expecting a single speaker to act as a surround channel, because surrounds must be paired in the app.

But you could also be referring to the S1 / S2 problem where they wanted to be able to fully utilize the added RAM and processing power in the newer generation devices but the old S1 devices did not have enough RAM to physically load the S2 firmware so they at first threatened to EOL all the S1 devices, but instead created an alternate firmware that continued to work on S1 devices but means that you can't combine S1 and S2 devices on the same app. In the end, they never bricked any devices under this plan and all those devices continue to work as sold.
And I can pair it with s2 devices I in the app, too. All the stuff that people knock on sonos for on the terrible app roll out a few years ago has been long since corrected. If you don't sonos that is fine, but no need to spread disinformation.
