They are stretchy and have some give. I'd say they fit similar to other j crew/br/gap and bit looser than vineyard.

I agree that its not a red flag but I dont agree knowing your size means much these days. Same company and brand, different pants are made in different countries. Even sometimes same line gets them made in different countries over time, this creates different cuts that make Garment fit differently. I would never buy garments like pants, shoes, dress shirts, things thst need to fit right and be comfortable, ifnthey are final sale online. If you can try them on, by all means go for it.
T Shirts, hoodies, sweatpants are more forgiving with size, as long as price is right but still why gamble.

J crew should at least offer store credit if tou taken it back to retail store.
