These Aootek solar motion lights are best known for easy outdoor path and stair lighting, with motion sensing and decent brightness when they work. Long runs are possible, especially on the larger button on the back version, and sealing the seam between the solar panel and housing with silicone or similar caulk can help. The smaller front button version has repeated reports of water intrusion, dead units, and sensors that stop turning on automatically. A few sets have lasted years in snow, storms, and winter weather, so durability seems to depend heavily on the version and sealing.

Common Questions (5)

  • Reported lifespan ranges from a few weeks to several years. Some units die in 1-2 months, while others have lasted 1-5 years, including sets still working after winters, heavy storms, and snow exposure.

  • Water intrusion is a recurring failure point: some units die after a few weeks or months, and rain can fill the housing and stop them working. Sealing the seam between the solar panel and light housing with silicone or tubeless tire sealant has helped some units last 2 years or more.

  • The smaller front-button version is reported to fail sooner, while the bigger button-on-back version has lasted a year and a half or longer for some users. Several comments say the newer smaller units are dying faster, with one report of about one-third failing after a year.

  • Yes. Sealing the seam where the solar panel meets the housing with silicone caulk or tubeless tire sealant has been used to keep water out, and some sealed units have kept working for 2 years or more.

  • The promo code is reported as not working, and the deal price later rose to $29.99 from the original $20 offer.

I have two similar looking things to this I bought from Amazon in October 2017. The description on the invoice says sold by "Aptoyu" and they have 10 LED's instead of 120 like these. I kid you not, they are still working fine as of today and they have been fully exposed to sun, rain, freezing temps, 95 degrees+ for almost 9 years now. Of course, they aren't for sale anymore and I can't even see a picture of them because they were removed. I use them to light up some outdoor stairs around the back. I've never replaced a battery in them or anything and the motion sensors work.
Good luck on these, your milage may vary!

Have installed the ones w/ buttons in the back. They've been going strong for at least a year. Having said that, they're not in the sun all day, which may be contributing to their useful lives. I live in the California Bay Area where the weather is very mild for most of the year. They'll get direct sunlight for a few hours during the day, usually not more than 3 hours per day. Almost anything that's plastic and placed out in the sun for a while is going to break down, and depending on weather, hours of sunlight, etc. These have been working well for me so far.

I would not trust things like this - I have had some before and agree to them dying and not being bright but they can also catch fire.

Same experience, they do not last long. The ones with the button on the bottom that are bigger have been going for the past year and a half. These lights with the button on the front is a complete waste of money if you plan on using them more than a couple months.
I have had the slightly bigger Aootek ones. Bought them in 2019. One lasted about three years, the other just died last year. I replaced them with these last year and they are still going, let's see if they can make 3-5 years as well. Doesn't sound like it from what I'm reading here.

The water got in and killed my solar lights. They need to waterproof these. I'll pass.

Got about 5 years out of mine before the battery would no longer hold charge.

I got a 4 pack of these and got them set up on my wooden fence for motion lights. It's been a few months and they are still going.

Are these worth it if you caulk the top to keep water out, or better to look for another light?
My wife and I bought this exact model last time they were on sale around $20 (small with front button). I tested them all to make sure they worked and then sealed them all, putting high-quality caulk around where the solar panel meets the body. After a week, only two still work correctly. Three are completely dead. The rest will come on if I push the button, but they will not come on automatically when it gets dark, regardless of the mode.
My brother has the bigger model with the buttons in the back and his have lasted much longer.
