It also seems like the removable weights on this vest work their way out over time. I'm not sure if any have actually fallen out. But I've taken off the vest and found multiple weights with the upper flaps out of place and behind the weights.
Lastly, adjusting the weights isn't a big deal. But they are much more of a pain that say swapping the weights on a barbell. The weights are flexible little sandbags being shoved into tight little pockets. I think that it would be easier if the weights were stiff iron that were consistently the correct size and shape. It would also probably be better if instead of 20 x 1 lbs weights, there were 4 x 5 lbs weights. That way it would be quicker to make meaningful changes to the weight.
In all honesty, consider your use case.
- If you are just using the vest for non-ballistic activities like walking, pushups, and squats, then a vest like this will work.
- If you don't need to adjust the weights, non-adjustable vests are normally simpler, slimmer, and better fitting.
- If you do want to adjust weights frequently, it may be worth your time to get a vest that's a bit nicer. Something that uses solid weights.
Below is an example of a non-adjustable 20 lbs vest that was on sale recently. I got it recently and gave the adjustable vest in this deal to Goodwill.https://slickdeals.net/f/19224691-ymmv-ac-23-76-20-lbs-prosourcefit-exercise-weighted-training-vest-at-amazon?src=SDSe

Bottom line this is a good starter vest for $20.

In a blog post from 2021 he talks about switching from barbell work to body weight plus vest workouts. He did this out of necessity after a motorcycle accident left him with spinal issues. While he does still think that training with a barbell work is the best for building strength, he enthusiastically acknowledges the benefits of training with a weighted vest.
If your goal is to get stronger in the traditional sense, a barbell is still the preferred way to go. But even then, a weighted vest can still be helpful for complimentary accessory, conditioning, or general purpose preparedness (GPP) work. I'm not saying everyone should go out and get one. But they are yet another legitimately useful tool you can use to improve your overall heath and fitness.
I ended up buying a cheap high-visibility pink vest to wear over my weighted one. I don't think anyone can be considered a threat looking like that.
They literally make anything (like just walking your dog) into more exercise than it would otherwise be with little effort, that's very effective.
