I have this exact vest. Works and fits really well (5'10" about 170). I use it for weight walks and weighted calisthenics (pullups and squat variations). I highly suggest for $20.

In my experience, this vest is not good for box jumps. Both my son and I have had the Velcro straps in the front become unattached from the front of the vest. The result is the straps are still around your torso like a belt that's way too high, and the weighted front flap moves around freely. It happens for us when jumping to a 30" box. I can't remember if it's happened on the 24". But when it does happen, your chances of missing and hitting your shin on the box skyrocket.

It also seems like the removable weights on this vest work their way out over time. I'm not sure if any have actually fallen out. But I've taken off the vest and found multiple weights with the upper flaps out of place and behind the weights.

Lastly, adjusting the weights isn't a big deal. But they are much more of a pain that say swapping the weights on a barbell. The weights are flexible little sandbags being shoved into tight little pockets. I think that it would be easier if the weights were stiff iron that were consistently the correct size and shape. It would also probably be better if instead of 20 x 1 lbs weights, there were 4 x 5 lbs weights. That way it would be quicker to make meaningful changes to the weight.

In all honesty, consider your use case.

  • If you are just using the vest for non-ballistic activities like walking, pushups, and squats, then a vest like this will work.
  • If you don't need to adjust the weights, non-adjustable vests are normally simpler, slimmer, and better fitting.
  • If you do want to adjust weights frequently, it may be worth your time to get a vest that's a bit nicer. Something that uses solid weights.
Below is an example of a non-adjustable 20 lbs vest that was on sale recently. I got it recently and gave the adjustable vest in this deal to Goodwill.

I have this vest for ~ a year and agree with everything said above.

Bottom line this is a good starter vest for $20.

I'd agree it's not a good fit for changing weights. It does add more effort to a walk, which if fine during the winter (when another outer layer is used), but otherwise I'm afraid it'd alarm people to see me in what otherwise might be mistaken for a bullet-proof vest. I haven't tried it yet with other types of exercises like push ups.

This vest will hurt your ribs. The cap branded one is uglier but more comfortable imo

My vest has 8 X 2.5 lb. bags and is tan camo pattern. I totally look like a suicide bomber. 💣☠️💪

FYI, this one is a CAP branded vest, too.

I have this vest. Not sure if it's because of how slim I am, but the vest straps dig into my shoulders, making painful lacerations after using it for a while. I eventually stopped using it all together because of it.

I bought this on a previous deal. Hard to get the bags into the pockets, and the seam between two pockets broke. Also, the device pocket is too small.

These weighted vests are not very effective. Better to do legitimate resistance and strength exercising.
Jim Wendler, author of the 5/3/1 lifting program, was a fan of weighted vests. In his original book from 2009, he highly recommended something like 45 minute walks with a 40 lbs vest on recovery days. This was LONG before the recent weighted vest trend. Weighted vests weren't common back then. And they probably cost a lot more too.

In a blog post from 2021 he talks about switching from barbell work to body weight plus vest workouts. He did this out of necessity after a motorcycle accident left him with spinal issues. While he does still think that training with a barbell work is the best for building strength, he enthusiastically acknowledges the benefits of training with a weighted vest.

If your goal is to get stronger in the traditional sense, a barbell is still the preferred way to go. But even then, a weighted vest can still be helpful for complimentary accessory, conditioning, or general purpose preparedness (GPP) work. I'm not saying everyone should go out and get one. But they are yet another legitimately useful tool you can use to improve your overall heath and fitness.

Vests are a lot more common these days, so you'd probably be ok. But when I first started using mine a few years ago, a common walking trail I'd take was behind an elementary school. You better believe I was afraid I'd get the cops called on me if I wore my vest on that trail.

I ended up buying a cheap high-visibility pink vest to wear over my weighted one. I don't think anyone can be considered a threat looking like that.

No one said they're supposed to replace resistance training.

They literally make anything (like just walking your dog) into more exercise than it would otherwise be with little effort, that's very effective.

Bought for cheaper and returned it. The weight bags provided do not all fit and allow the Velcro to close and hold them down. They kept coming out and falling all over the place. I had paid $12 and did not think it was worth it, now $20 is a definite NO.
