If you are the patient kind of person, any of the grocery store date seeds (Medjool - large, super soft & sugary)) and Deglet Noor (not as big and sugary) after you eat them will grow and get you more palm plants than you ever want.
take the seeds, put in clean warm 70-90F degrees of water (like behind your computer CPU) , and let it sit, you'll see a little white nub growing from out of it after a while, then you can plant it and grow it. If it hasn't grown yet, change the water every 5 days a so. Your water may get a little cloudy, and the seed may get a little film over the exterior. just give a light rub and rinse off the stuff.
The appearance of Medjool & Deglet palms are different, but that's the fun for you to find out.
Aside from having your own pots, dirt and buying dates. Your plant is free (and that goes for pineapples too).

Thank you for sharing. I haven't had much success growing date palms from seed, but you might've inspired me to try again.

I'm buying it every year for the same price. Look super nice on my patio in the summer. Unfortunately they're doing super poorly inside. They're growing new leaves, but they're drying immediately. I hope they will get better when I put them outside again.

Here's some more data points, from a person who owns around 100 house plants (allegedly, I'm trying not to count!). It is really hard to care for house plants that require full sun, such as palm trees. Even if you have a window that is not blocked by trees etc, the angle of the light etc will still make it such that it will provide way less light than outside. You can use a light meter app on your phone to compare how much light outside your window, and inside where your plant is sitting. It is not a little bit less light, it is a lot less.

A plant that does not get its needs met will be weaker, and therefore will take higher damage from pests. Pests can stay dormant in soil over winter months and pop up again in spring, so they can come back again and again. They can also come through windows, so I would not keep more vulnerable plants close to open windows, or put them outside. Heating in winter can also do a lot of damage, if it dries the air or blows directly onto the plant.

After years of experimenting with lots of plants, what i did (since I really wanted a palm tree) was I got a madagascar palm (which usually comes as a starter plant in a small pot) and put it under a grow light. it's pretty slow growing and compact, so i think I can keep it fairly small for a very long time, while still having a palm tree shaped plant in the house.

People think that they can keep a tall lush tropical plant in a dark corner of their house. that is not going to happen, just google how its natural habitat looks like and it will become clear why. but you can try perhaps a large zz plant and perhaps a monstera. everything else will look miserable. I would rather not have any plant than a half dead pathetic one. I would also add that orchids (the phalaenopsis varieties sold at grocery stores) are quite resilient and pretty even when not in bloom. So instead of getting one big plant, one can also put together a shelf of orchids. Just don't put ice cubes on them, learn how to care for them properly.

Thank you for coming to my ted talk. I really like plants, couldn't help myself and wrote an entire novel Big Grin

If you dont have a ton of light, a Parlor Palm plant would grow even in a north window.

So what's a good large-ish house plant (that's not susceptible to spider mites/ other pests) to fill an empty corner?
white bird of paradise is on sale
